For information on installing VT3K/9000, refer to Managing HP-UX Software, or consult the swpackage and swinstall manpages. VT3K/9000 requires no configuration. Before using VT3K/9000, prepare as follows:

  • Ensure that the HP 9000 and HP 3000 are on the same internetwork (network with gateways). VT3K/9000 can cross gateways as long as routing information is available for the systems off your local network.

  • Configuration checks:

    • Ensure that the HP 9000 and HP 3000 are both configured for Ethernet.

    • Ensure that the Virtual Terminal service (VTA) is running on the remote HP 3000. You can check this on the HP 3000 by issuing NSCONTROL STATUS=SERVICES. The operator enables the VTA service on the HP 3000 by issuing NSCONTROL START or by individually using the symbolic name VTA (that is, NSCONTROL START=VTA).

    • Ensure that the HP 3000 is configured either in the domain name server or in the /etc/hosts file.

  • On MPE, VT3K/9000 requires at least MPE/iX Release 4.0 or MPE V Release 30. An NS transport patch is required for MPE/iX releases 4.0 and 4.5. The patches are NSTCDK7 or later for MPE/iX Release 4.0 and patch NSTCDK6 or later for MPE/iX Release 4.5. Those patches are incorporated in MPE/iX 5.0 and later versions. A patch is available for MPE/V Release 2P ( NSSANT7 or later). The LAN Link and Network Services products are required on the HP 3000.

  • To test if your HP 9000 and HP 3000 are talking, try pinging the HP 3000 from your HP 9000. (See the ping(1M) man page.)
