NAMEval — validate SCCS file DESCRIPTIONThe val command reads one or more files to determine whether each file read is an SCCS file meeting the characteristics specified by the optional argument list. Command-line options may appear in any order, and are described below. OptionsThe val command recognizes the following options and command-line arguments. The effects of each option apply independently to each specified file.
EXTERNAL INFLUENCESEnvironment VariablesLC_CTYPE determines the interpretation of text within file as single- and/or multi-byte characters. LC_MESSAGES determines the language in which messages are displayed. If LC_CTYPE or LC_MESSAGES is not specified in the environment or is set to the empty string, the value of LANG is used as a default for each unspecified or empty variable. If LANG is not specified or is set to the empty string, a default of "C" (see lang(5)) is used instead of LANG. If any internationalization variable contains an invalid setting, val behaves as if all internationalization variables are set to "C". See environ(5). RETURN VALUEThe 8-bit code returned by val is a disjunction of the possible errors; i. e., can be interpreted as a bit string where (moving from left to right) set bits are interpreted as follows:
Note that val can process two or more files on a given command line, and in turn can process multiple command lines (when reading the standard input). In these cases an aggregate code is returned; a logical OR of the codes generated for each command line and file processed. DIAGNOSTICSval generates diagnostic messages on the standard output for each command line and file processed, and also returns a single 8-bit code upon exit as described earlier under RETURN VALUE. Use the sccshelp(1) command for explanations. |
