COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL Release 1.2, Version A.20.10
HP DeskManager B.03.B0
by Jill Cullyer--Office Productivity Division
The latest version of HP DeskManager (B.03.B0) is now available.
HP DeskManager B.03.B0 provides enhancements that were not available with
earlier releases of B.03, which were known as B.03.00 and B.03.A0.
HP DeskManager has been enhanced to provide support for:
* Localization into 16-bit (non-USASCII) languages, in particular, for
Japan, Korea, and Taiwan
* Programmatic access to HP DeskManager via HP DeskManager Intrinsics
(HP27562)
* X.400 gateway using HP OfficeConnect to X.400 (HP30257)
16-BIT LANGUAGE SUPPORT
HP DeskManager B.03.00 now allows localization in languages that use
16-bit characters. As a result HP DeskManager is now dependent on NLS
A.03.00 software.
Check with your Sales Representative for the availability of:
* HP36570AJ opt. AB0 (Taiwanese version)
* HP36570AJ opt. AB1 (Korean version)
* HP36570AJ opt. ACA (Japanese version)
Changes Due to Support of 16-bit Characters
There are 2 new JCWs that allow you to use the 16-bit language
capability. These only work with a localized 16-bit version of HP Desk.
* NLUSERLANG determines which language messages and screen prompts are
displayed
* NLDATALANG determines which language users will type
It is necessary to set whichever JCW is required before running HP Desk.
The languages specified for these two JCWs do not need to be the same.
Hence a user could have messages in their native language, such as
Chinese, and still type text in English. This will be useful for Asian
based offices of international companies who communicate predominantly
with Western countries but who wish to maintain native language versions
of the product.
There is a new database called, the Native Data Base. This database
stores the non-USASCII names for those users who have them. It also
stores the linkage to the user's conventional HP Desk name.
To support and maintain the Native Data Base, the following HP Desk
utilities have been enhanced:
* MAILCONFIG builds the Native Data Base and allows configuration of
non-USASCII names.
* MAILMAINT Report includes a Native Data Set Summary report.
* Batch Configurator has two new transaction codes, 48 and 49, for
adding and renaming non-USASCII names.
* PASSEDIT for Native Data Base password.
* MAILBUILDNATIVE UDC creates the Native Data Base on existing HP Desk
systems that wish to use 16-bit languages.
16-bit characters are supported in:
* User names (including the signon name, distribution lists, and Filing
Cabinet search name)
* Item subjects (including messages and folders)
* Message text
NOTE The HP Desk screen editor must be used for editing 16-bit text
messages.
The USASCII name, rather than the non-USASCII name, is stored in the
distribution list and subsequently sent with the message. This ensures
that all machines in an HP Desk network can recognize the name. A
language ID is also sent with the text of the message so the recipient
system can check whether or not the message can be displayed. If the
message can not be displayed the user will receive a warning.
NOTE On systems in a network running versions of HP DeskManager prior to
B.03.00 no warning is issued, and HP Desk will attempt to display
the message which may be unreadable.
HP DESKMANAGER INTRINSICS
HP DeskManager now supports programmatic access via the HP DeskManager
Intrinsics. These intrinsics allow direct communication of information
between an application program and an HP Desk user across an HP Desk
network, and program to program communication via the HP Desk network.
They also allow application access to the calendar, directory and
document conversion services. HP DeskManager Intrinsics is a separate
bolt-on product to HP DeskManager. For further information see the
Communicator article "HP DeskManager Intrinsics A.00.00."
Changes Due to Support of HP DeskManager Intrinsics
There are three distinct sets of Intrinsics: User, Supporting and
Gateway Intrinsics.
The User Intrinsics will only work if the HP Desk User Interface is
enabled. The MAILSTATUS command can be used, as it is normally used
within HP Desk to show if the User Interface is enabled. MAILSHOWUSER,
which shows all users signed onto HP Desk, also identifies users signed
on via the intrinsic HPDUserSignOn by an asterisk after their name.
To support the Gateway Intrinsics, there are three new operator commands.
They take effect only when the Intrinsics are installed.
* MAILGATEINTON must be issued before the Gateway Intrinsics can be
used. This sets a new flag, GATEINT, in the Supervisor Process
Management File.
* MAILGATEINTOFF is used to disable the Gateway Intrinsics.
* MAILGATESTATUS shows the current status of applications using the
Gateway Intrinsics.
To support the Gateway Intrinsic, HPGateReceive, extra functionality is
required in HP Desk, in particular the Gateway Manager (analogous to the
Supervisor) is new to version B.03.00. To minimize the overhead to users
who will not run the Gateway Intrinsics, this extra functionality may be
switched on and off by creating or deleting a permanent file called
INTRNFLG.MAILDB.HPOFFICE. The file acts as a flag, but will not be
recognized as such unless it is created while the Supervisor is down.
MAILCONFIG has been enhanced to allow configuration of Intrinsic
gateways. A new screen becomes available once the Intrinsics have been
installed and the file INTRNFLG has been both created and recognized.
The Intrinsics log certain situations to the system operator's console
and to a new logfile called INTRNLOG.MAILDB.HPOFFICE. MAILCONFIG may be
used to determine where such messages will appear.
HP OFFICECONNECT TO X.400
HP OfficeConnect to X.400 is an X.400 gateway, conforming to OSI
standards, providing electronic mail connectivity between HP DeskManager
and other mail systems complying to the internationally ratified X.400
standard. This X.400 capability is provided by an off-board Network
Interface Unit (NIU) which is attached to the host HP 3000 via a LAN, and
to the external X.400 environment using X.25.
This is a limited distribution product and for further information see
the product data sheet within "June '88 AdvanceNet Specification Guide"
(P/N 5956-4144).
Changes Due to Support of X.400 Gateway
* Message priority can be set to low priority, as it is a standard of
X.400. Such messages will be sent once all urgent and normal
messages have gone. The priority is set similarly to URGENT. For
example,
MESSAGE>LOW
LOWPRI
LOWPRIORITY
To reset, LOW NO
* Aided addressing for X.400 addresses in the HP Desk User Interface is
provided via a function key or by typing +X400 at the Distribution
list prompts.
* Support for X.400 message headers. X.400 message headers can be read
provided the message is opened and the X.400 message header item is
read.
If versions of HP DeskManager prior to B.03.00 are running on other
systems in the network then users of these systems will not be able to
take advantage of the above X.400 changes, such as aided addressing.
The following changes only appear if HP OfficeConnect to X.400 is
installed on the system:
* Aided addressing for configuring X.400 addresses in MAILCONFIG via
additional configuration screens.
* Integration of the X.400 configurator under MAILCONFIG.
MISCELLANEOUS ENHANCEMENTS
* Replies to Prompts can be included in scripts by placing a "+" at the
beginning of the line of the response. For example, a script could
consist of: (assume Screen Text entry)
SEND
+This is the SUBJECT
+John Wayne/Duke/01
+//
+Hi John,...
+//
MAIL
* The Pending Tray can keep track of the status of messages for CC and
BCC categories in addition to the TO category of a distribution list,
by using ALL on the ACK command. For example,
ACK 5 ALL
* It is possible to supply a subject for the search reply when issuing
a SEARCH in the Filing Cabinet. This overrides the default subject
of "SEARCH REPLY" .
* NEWMAIL will now list all users with the same name rather than just
the first 20 as in previous versions.
* The limit for user name matching has been increased from 500 to 1000.
This means, when creating a distribution list, if a user enters a
common user surname, such as Smith, HP Desk will list up to a 1000
names from which to choose.
* An expiration date can now be specified when setting an AUTOANSWER.
* The FORWARD command can forward multiple items. For example,
FORWARD 5/7
* The WORDTEXT convertor has been enhanced to allow TEXT to HP Word
conversions.
* Distribution List to TEXT conversion is now possible.
* Conversion from Executive MemoMaker to AdvanceWrite and vice versa is
now possible within HP Desk.
* An MPE file summarizing the changes for this release of HP Desk is
now held under the filename of N00NFILE.MAILLIB.HPOFFICE. New
