COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL Release 1.2, Version A.20.10
Silhouette A.01.00
by Gary Alvord--Commercial Systems Division
Silhouette has been enhanced to use Network Inter-Process Communication
(NetIPC) and Remote Process Management (RPM) services of NS/3000. Built
into the Silhouette system startup routine is the ability to determine
which data communication service to use: DS/3000 Program-to-Program (DS
PTOP) for earlier data communication systems or NS/3000 NetIPC and RPM
for newer systems using LAN/3000. One common version of Silhouette is
required for all systems in the Silhouette network.
NEW FEATURE TO HANDLE SECONDARY SYSTEM FAILURES
This new Silhouette feature will provide more protection of data and
easier recovery for Secondary system software failure events. To
successfully recover Silhouette from Secondary system failures, all
database, SAVE and logfiles must be logically intact and up-to-date after
a system failure or halt. The SAVE file will also need to reflect all
the most recent updates to the database. This feature will guarantee
this recovery state and eliminate the need for doing Secondary database
restores. However, enabling this feature may not be appropriate for some
Silhouette environments.
This feature will benefit customers in situations where Secondary
database activity is low and the integrity of the database(s) must be
guaranteed in the event of a secondary failure. Frequent Secondary
system software failures is another situation which will benefit from
enabling this feature. However, some Silhouette environments invoking
this feature can sometimes greatly limit system performance on the
Secondary system. High usage production environments may want to consult
a Silhouette-Trained SE prior to using this feature. Steps for
installation and recovery using this new feature is documented in the
related article in the "Technical Articles" section in this Communicator.
NEW SWITCH COMMAND OPTIONS
New options for the SWITCH command have been implemented to provide the
same flexibility as the RECOVER command. An option such as NOROLLBACK on
a SWITCH can be particularly useful if a customer has their own utility
to roll back incomplete transactions. For more detailed information,
refer to the related article in the "Technical Articles" section in this
Communicator.
