COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL Release 1.2, Version A.20.10
Chapter 3 DATA COMMUNICATIONS
NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link
by Anastasia Saltabida--Business Networks Division
NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link is a software and hardware product
that provides the first HP-to-HP wide area networking on Spectrum.
The functionality of NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link is the result
of porting the NS3000/V Transport to the new operating environment (MPE
XL Release 1.2), which is being provided on the HP 3000 series 9xx.
NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link uses the LAP-B protocol over the
PSI card.
The release of NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link includes
enhancements made to the Network Transport.
A new type of network topology is introduced, the ROUTER.
By using gateways and gateway-halves, internet communication is now
possible between MPE XL systems as well as between MPE XL and MPE V/E
systems
POINT-TO-POINT NETWORK LINK DIFFERENCES
There are some differences between the NS Point-to-Point 3000/V Network
Link and the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link. The following are
not supported in the MPE XL environment:
* Bisync
* RASP
* Manual dial
* Powerfail recovery
PRODUCT STRUCTURE AND COMPONENTS
Like all the other NS remote links, the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network
Link consists of both hardware and software components.
The hardware consists of:
* A PSI card
* The proper synchronous interface cable (RS-232-L, V35, RS-232 with
RS-366 Auto Dial)
The software consists of the following modules:
* NetIPC is a set of intrinsics which is an interface to the Transport.
One can program the transport modules TCP, IP, and IPU using the
NetIPC intrinsics.
* Network Transport contains the software modules TCP, PXP, IP, and
IPU. Transport modules make communication between different systems
transparent to the user.
* Link software.
PRODUCT FEATURES
The NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link product provides:

MIGRATION
NMMGRVER.PUB.SYS is a program that can be used to convert old
configuration files to the current release. The old configuration can be
created on either previous MPE XL Releases 1.0, 1.1 or on MPE`V/E
operating system release UB-Delta-3 or later.
INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION
Customers who are using MPE XL Release 1.2 tapes to install MPE XL for
the first time must create the data communication configuration file
NMCONFIG.PUB.SYS from the sample file NMSAMP1.PUB.SYS and configure the
DTS first. For information on how to configure the DTS, refer to Chapter
9, 12, and Appendix C of the MPE XL Asynchronous Serial Communications
System Administrator's Manual (P/N 32022-61000).
After the DTS is configured, NS must be configured through NMMGR. It is
recommended that the guided configuration feature be used for
configuration. The physical path of the PSI card and/or the LANIC card
must be configured. Refer to the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network
Configuration Guide (P/N 36922-61001) and the NS3000/XL Local Area
Network Configuration Guide (P/N 36922-61000).
Customers who have previous versions of MPE XL installed on their systems
should use the program NMMGRVER to convert the old configuration files to
MPE XL Release 1.2 for DTS and NS. Refer to Chapter 7 of the HP 3000 MPE
XL Installation and Update Manual (P/N 36123-90001) for converting old
configuration files.
RECOMMENDED REFERENCE MANUALS
