Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION XL Release 1.1 Overview by Ed Bomber, Commercial Systems Division The first Commercial Systems XL Release 1.1 supports several new products and contains performance enhancements to many existing products. This commercial release will provide a significant increase in the performance, functionality, and reliability of the MPE XL Operating System. The MPE XL Operating System on Release 1.0 was based on MPE V/E UB-MIT. The operating system on Release 1.1 is based on MPE V/E V-Delta 1. This means that all the improvements put in MPE V/E between UB-MIT and V-Delta 1 are now included in Release 1.1. SYSTEM INFORMATION Several enhancements have been made to the MPE XL user interface. The :ERRDUMP command has been added primarily for the system debugging process. The :LISTF and :PRINT commands and the system variable set have been enhanced. Command Interpreter (CI) variables and expressions have been added. Additionally, Native Language Support (NLS) has been enhanced to include support of Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese languages. SOFTWARE PRODUCTS New software products for this release include: Transact/XL, Virtuoso Code Generator, and HP Visor/XL. Transact/XL features include a Native Mode compiler, and the high-level programming language and interpreter associated with Transact/V. Additional enhancements have also been added to Transact. The Virtuoso Code Generator is a programmer productivity tool for use in application development and maintenance. Virtuoso is now available on MPE XL Systems. HP Visor/XL is a new tool that allows technical and non-technical HP SQL/V users to perform ad-hoc inquiries and create reports. HP Visor XL also allows technical users to modify data through the SQL database management language. In addition, the result parameter in the intrinsic declaration for EXTIN' has been modified for this XL Release. PERIPHERAL SUPPORT The HP7937FL Eagle/AMUX Disc is the new Fiber-Optic Version of the Eagle disc drive. This disc drive has the same high performance and capacity as the HP7937H, but replaces the HP-IB (1 Megabyte/second) interface with fiber-optic ALINK/AMUX (5 Megabyte/second) interface. This XL Release also includes support of the HP7979 and HP7980 tape drives. DATABASE TOOLS Additional performance improvements have been incorporated into TurboIMAGE/XL. TurboIMAGE/XL has been designed to be closely compatible IMAGE/V. TurboIMAGE/XL provides HP 3000 users with a familiar network based DBMS which also incorporates the unique features of the Hewlett-Packard Precision Architecture and MPE XL Operating System.
