Introducing ALLBASE/Turbo CONNECT

ALLBASE/Turbo CONNECT, also known as Dual Access, gives transparent read
access to TurboIMAGE/XL data through the ALLBASE/SQL relational
interface. ALLBASE/Turbo CONNECT makes coexistence of TurboIMAGE/XL and
ALLBASE/SQL possible, and it is developed in recognition that
Hewlett-Packard wants to preserve customers' investments in TurboIMAGE.
Applications may issue queries on TurboIMAGE data via ALLBASE Interactive
SQL (ISQL) utility or preprocessed code using standard ALLBASE/SQL
syntax. Similar access using products such as ALLBASE/Query and
ALLBASE/4GL are also supported. Applications that currently access
TurboIMAGE/XL directly may continue to do so concurrently with
ALLBASE/Turbo CONNECT and without change.
ALLBASE/Turbo CONNECT is a separately purchasable product, available only
on MPE XL systems.
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
ALLBASE/Turbo CONNECT can be thought of as being comprised of four units:
TurboIMAGE/XL, ALLBASE/SQL (with the capability of recognizing non-SQL
access), the Attach/Detach facility (called ATCUTIL), and the runtime
interface.
Attaching implies insertion of information about TurboIMAGE datasets and
their items into the ALLBASE/SQL system catalog. Detaching is just the
opposite, and is the deletion of this information from the system
catalog. The "ATTACH/DETACH" procedures are to be done by the Database
Administrator. To the end users, the runtime interface makes ALLBASE/SQL
access to TurboIMAGE/XL transparent. There is no significant difference
between reading a "native" SQL table and reading a TurboIMAGE dataset.
A small number of ALLBASE/SQL commands are not allowed to operate on
TurboIMAGE datasets. These are the commands that alter the underlying
database structure or modify the content of the database. In such cases,
an appropriate error message is returned to the user.
