Chapter 4 DATA COMMUNICATIONS
Introducing Information Access/XL!

Information Access allows PC users to retrieve data from PCs, HP 3000s,
and/or IBM mainframes to solve critical business problems quickly. It
allows business decision makers to make timely, informed decisions
without MIS involvement, by providing retrieval and manipulation of data
from IMAGE databases on the HP 3000, Cullinet databases on IBM
mainframes, as well as various PC databases, all through the same user
interface.
Information Access/XL runs in Native Mode to take full advantage of the
processing power of the HPPA product line. The functionality of
Information Access/XL is equivalent to that of the A.03.00 release of
Information Access/V, except the Cullinet Link product is not available
at this time. There are also some data communications considerations
described below.
Note that Information Access/XL is a different product than Information
Access/V (although the PC components are identical). Information Access
is NOT supported in Compatibility Mode on MPE XL systems. The MPE XL
product contains the A.03.10 version of HP Access Central, and the
A.03.00 version of HP Access for the PC. (The current MPE/V version of HP
Access Central is A.03.00, with the A.03.00 version of HP Access).

REMOTE CONNECTS TO ENTIRE FAMILY OF HP 3000S
With Information Access and Remote 3000 Link on MPE/V, you can access
information on remote HP 3000s connected via either DS/3000 or NS/3000
one node away from the local HP 3000. The current MPE/V release of
Information Access can now also access remote information on MPE XL
systems connected to the MPE/V system via NS/3000 on a LAN.
With Information Access and Remote 3000 Link installed on an MPE XL
system, you can similarly access information stored on either MPE/V or
MPE XL systems connected to the local HP 3000 via NS/3000.
CULLINET LINK NOT YET AVAILABLE
The Cullinet Link will not be available with the first release of
Information Access/XL. This companion product will be available shortly
after SNA/IMF between an HP 3000/9xx and IBM mainframes becomes
available.
PC DATA COMMUNICATION CONSIDERATIONS
With this release, PCs running HP Access, the PC component of Information
Access, may only connect to the MPE XL HP 3000 via a serial line to the
Distributed Terminal Controller (DTC). PC LAN connections (available in
the current MPE/V version of the product) will be supported in a
subsequent release of the MPE XL version of the product.
Because of data communications incompatibilities, the A.03.00 release of
HP Access is required on the HP Vectra or IBM PC/XT/AT in order to use
Information Access/XL successfully. Older releases for the HP 150 will
be compatible, as long as the terminal configuration screen is modified
to indicate that XON/XOFF handshaking is used when connected to a DTC.
