Installing a CD-ROM Drive on an HP 3000 System
Before installing the HP CD extensions software, you need to install a
CD-ROM drive on your HP 3000 system and configure the drive as an LDEV in
SYSGEN.
For information on installing the CD-ROM drive, refer to the
documentation that comes with your CD-ROM drive. If you need
instructions for configuring the drive, see Appendix A .
Configuration and Performance
Performance of the networked CD-ROM drive will vary, depending on your HP
3000 model, PC processor, and LAN card; the available capacity on your
network and HP 3000 system; and the number of users concurrently
accessing the CD. Within Hewlett-Packard's corporate network environment,
a Vectra 486/50U accessing a CD-ROM on an HP 3000/917LX (Nova) performs
comparably to a local PC CD-ROM drive.
However, because of the variables involved, there is no guarantee that
you will be able to attain the same performance in your corporate network
environment. A good rule of thumb is that if your users are complaining
about network performance while using other applications, this
application will also be slow. Also keep in mind that, relative to a
hard disk drive, CD-ROM drives are inherently slow. Generally, users
will accept the performance of a CD-ROM application if the data satisfies
a critical but infrequent need.
Because of the limitations of network performance, we do not recommend
this solution for multimedia applications. You will also need to
consider memory management on the PC. MSCDEX requires 32 KB of
conventional memory, and the HP CD extensions virtual device driver
requires an additional 16 KB.
