Installation Instructions for Low-End Systems with 8 MByte Controller
Card
by Anita Doucet
Commercial Systems Division
Several low-end system models have a hardware limitation due to the 8
MByte controller card used to load the initial system START image or
boot-up code. Machines with this limitation require a different set of
installation procedures for installing "PowerPatch" installation only and
"SUBSYS and PowerPatch" (options number 1 and 2 of AUTOINST).
\ \ \ Important Details \ Please Read If your system is an 8 MByte
system that has been previously
updated with PowerPatch, you must
follow the alternate instructions
for installing software with the
"PowerPatch" only and "SUBSYS and
PowerPatch" options 1 and 2 of
AUTOINST. Failure to follow these
installation procedures as defined
will lead to serious problems.
These problems range from an
inability to start the system or a
system abort during boot-up, or if
the installation is performed with
AUTOINST option number 2, "SUBSYS
and PowerPatch," the system will
have a partial install of a
subsystem product(s), which may
lead to data corruption.
The following steps help you to determine whether a machine has the
potential of hitting the 8 MByte limitation. Also included are the
modified installation instructions required to perform a PowerPatch Only
or Subsystem Add-On and PowerPatch installation with AUTOINST.
Steps for Determining if Your System has the 8 MByte Limitation
1. Determine the System Model
The following system models were initially released with 8 MByte
controller cards:
Series 922/922LX/922RX, 925, 930, 932, 935
The following systems could also contain 8 MByte cards if they are
using the same memory subsystems as above:
Series 920, 948, 949, 958
If the system to be updated is not listed above, stop now and
proceed with the standard installation instructions documented in
the HP 3000 PowerPatch/iX Installation Manual (30216-90141). If
you have one of the systems listed, continue to step 2.
2. Determine the Memory Controller/Array Size
Run the SYSDIAG diagnostic program to display the internal memory
of your system.
First, log on to the system being patched as MANAGER.SYS,INSTALL.
Run SYSDIAG to determine the sizes of the main memory controllers
and arrays on the system. This is to identify whether or not
there are any memory boards with more than 8 MBytes of memory. To
do this, type the following commands:
:SYSDIAG
DUI > SYSMAP
ENTER MAP > MEMMAP
The following is an example of the information displayed:
SYSTEM MEMORY MAP
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SLOT HPA MEMORY
MODULE TYPE NUMBER SPA SIZE STATUS/MODEL/REVISION
============= ====== ======== ======== =======================
CONTROLLER #1 3 FFF8C000 8 MBYTES ENABLED/NON-INTERLEAVED
HARDWARE MODEL NUMBER - $2
REVISION NUMBER - $F
CONTROLLER #2 4 FFF90000 12 MBYTES ENABLED/NON-INTERLEAVED
HARDWARE MODEL NUMBER - $2
REVISION NUMBER - $F
ARRAY #1 5 20 MBYTES ENABLED/NON-INTERLEAVED
Review the Module Type and Memory Size columns. If any controller
or array module type listed has a memory size LARGER than 8
MBytes, the system is not limited to an 8 MByte memory size and
the system can be updated using the standard MPE/iX system,
add-on, and installation procedures documented in the HP 3000
PowerPatch/iX Installation Manual (30216-90141)
Exit out of the program now by typing:
ENTER MAP > EXIT
DUI > EXIT
:
If all controller and array Module Types are 8 MBytes or less,
proceed to step 3.
3. Determine if a PowerPatch Tape was Previously Installed
The system now needs to be checked to establish whether an MPE/iX
Release 4.0 PowerPatch tape has been applied as applying patches
to a system will add to the total amount of system memory required
to boot the system.
To check for the installation of a PowerPatch tape, scan the
HPSWINFO.PUB.SYS file for the phrase "POWERPATCH TAPE" .An example
follows:
:EDITOR
HP32201A.07.21 EDIT/3000 WED, APRIL 19, 1993, 5:08 PM
(C) HEWLETT-PACKARD CO. 1991
/TEXT HPSWINFO.PUB.SYS
FILE UNNUMBERED
/FIND "POWERPATCH TAPE"
If no occurrences of the phrase "POWERPATCH TAPE" are found, the system
can be installed using the standard installation processes documented in
the HP 3000 PowerPatch/iX Installation Manual (30216-90141).
If one or more occurrences of the phrase "POWERPATCH TAPE" are found,
then a PowerPatch tape has been previously installed and the system must
be updated using the alternate installation instructions detailed below.
Alternate Installation Procedures
1. Locate Installation Material
To perform the installation, you need to collect the following
items:
a. the original factory supplied MPE/iX Release 4.0 System
Load Tape (SLT), FOS, and customized SUBSYS product tapes
b. the HP 3000 MPE/iX Installation, Update, and Add-On Manual
(36123-90001) that was delivered with the original factory
MPE/iX Release 4.0 tapes
c. the PowerPatch tape that you recently received and intend
to update with
d. the customized SUBSYS product tape(s) that you recently
received and intend to update with. (Optional: only if
new products requiring FOS enhancements are added to the
system)
e. the HP 3000 PowerPatch/iX Installation Manual (30216-90141)
that came with the PowerPatch tape
f. any reactive patch tape(s) that were previously applied to
the system after the initial MPE/iX Release 4.0
installation. (Optional: only if reactive patches were
applied)
g. the Reactive patch/AUTOPAT installation documentation.
(Optional: only if reactive patches were applied)
h. schedule enough downtime to perform three or four system
updates
You do not need to obtain any PowerPatch tapes that have been
previously applied as the PowerPatch/iX product is cumulative and
patches roll forward automatically.
If any of these items are not available, you must call the
Response Center for assistance.
Once all of the materials have been collected, proceed to step 2.
2. Update with MPE/iX Release 4.0 SLT, FOS and SUBSY
Using your factory supplied release tapes and the HP 3000 MPE/iX
Installation, Update, and Add-On Manual (36123-90001), follow the
instructions in sections 3.3.3 through 3.6 to update the system to
release 4.0. This will ensure that you have a clean system
without patches.
After successfully performing the update with the 4.0 CSLT
produced using AUTOINST option number 3, proceed to step 3.
3. Reinstall all Reactive Patches (Optional)
Perform this step only if you have previously installed any
reactive patch(es) onto the system and those patches have not
already been rolled into the PowerPatch tape you will install in
step 4. To determine if your reactive patches have been released
on PowerPatch, compare the patch IDs listed on your AUTOPAT
instruction sheet to the Patch Matrix documented in Chapter 2 of
the PowerPatch/iX Reference Manual (30216-90157).
If no reactive patches were previously applied, you may proceed
with step 4.
Otherwise, continue with the installation of the reactive patches
not already included in PowerPatch using reactive patch tape(s)
and AUTOINST instructions collected in step 1.
4. Install the New Software
To install only a PowerPatch tape:
Use the AUTOINST option 1, "PowerPatch," instructions documented
in Chapter 2 of the HP 3000 PowerPatch/iX Installation Manual
(30216-90141) along with the new PowerPatch tape.
To install a subsystem product with a PowerPatch tape:
Use AUTOINST option 2, "SUBSYS and PowerPatch," instructions
documented in Chapter 3 of the HP 3000 PowerPatch/iX Installation
Manual (30216-90141) along with the new customized SUBSYS tape(s)
and the PowerPatch tape.
