The Documentation Set
In addition to this guide, a number of other books are provided with this
COBOL System. A complete discussion on the composition of this
documentation is contained in the Getting Started book; however, a
summary of this information is provided here:
* The Getting Started book contains an introduction to the system
components and provides directions for installing the software.
It also explains the development process to follow in producing a
program or application using this system. It is recommended that
you read this book first and try the sample session for yourself.
* The Language Reference and Language Reference - Additional Topics
descibe the COBOL language supported by this system.
* This COBOL User Guide describes the COBOL development cycle and
creation of linked applications, how to produce efficient
applications, how to work with other languages, and how to create
applications which use Multi-user files and Motif. You should
familiarize yourself with this book after reading the Getting
Started book.
* The COBOL System Reference provides detailed information on the
functionality and operation of the system components. Its
contents are essentially technical, describing all the options
available to you when using the software supplied in this product.
It concentrates on the effects of using particular syntax in the
UNIX environment.
Each chapter in the COBOL System Reference is dedicated to a system
component. Appendices contain descriptions of frequently used directives
and switches for system components as well as supplementary information
not essential for the use of this system. The glossary defines the terms
and concepts used in this COBOL system.
Once you are familiar with the overall working of this COBOL system, you
will be able to refer to this book for specific details.
