Key Usage
Most UNIX terminals do not send a sequence when the Alt or Ctrl key is
pressed. This means that there is no way for the COBOL system to detect
these keys, so instead you should use /a for Alt and /c for Ctrl.
Chapter 5 , UNIX Key Usage Chart at the back of this book lists
alternatives for other keys that may also be undetectable on your
specific UNIX terminal.
The same appendix also appears in the COBOL Operating Guide.
The appendix also tells you how to select soft or hard operation for the
Alt and Ctrl keys. With soft operation, the Alt or Ctrl key is
automatically turned off after the next keystroke. This means that
whenever you want a function from the Alt menu you must hold down Alt
again to get the Alt menu displayed; and similarly with Ctrl.
With hard operation, the Alt and Ctrl keys work in a similar way to the
Caps Lock key, in that having been pressed they remain in effect until
pressed again.
For information on configuring your keyboard, see the chapter Keyboard
Configuration Utility in your COBOL Operating Guide.
