HP SPT/XL User's Manual: Analysis Software
Disk Space Requirements
The amount of disk space required for the HP SPT/XL logfile can vary
widely. This wide variation is due to the fact that HP SPT/XL logs
information at every intrinsic call and return. Therefore, the size of
the logfile depends on the rate that intrinsics are called by the
application being monitored.
Different applications will call intrinsics at different rates. Batch
programs will call more intrinsics per hour than online programs, but a
rough guideline is 400 kilobytes per 1000 intrinsic calls. An example
situation is the order entry application used in the HP SPT/XL User's
Manual: Analysis Software. This application with a 10-second think time
per terminal read would require approximately 400 kilobytes of disk space
per minute.
After the data has been collected, the end-of-file of the logfile is
reduced to the minimum size possible. However, the file limit is still
very large. The analysis of the logfile will require additional space in
the file to restructure the data from a chronological organization to a
transaction-based organization. The amount of additional disk space
required for the analysis phase will vary depending on how many
transactions are defined. As a rule-of-thumb, the restructured logfile
will be twice the size of an unprocessed logfile (one that has never been
analyzed). Once the logfile has been through its initial restructuring,
its size may increase or decrease slightly if transactions are redefined.
