Appendix C A Technical Discussion of HP SPT/XL Data Collection Introduction HP SPT/XL groups the resources consumed by an application into two categories. The first category contains resources consumed directly by Application Code. The second contains resources consumed by System Code, more specifically, intrinsics on behalf of the application. Different information is needed about these two categories of resource consumption. For example, an application programmer need not be interested in nor aware of internal system procedures executed within an intrinsic called by his application program. On the other hand, this is very important where the application program is executing within its own code. Therefore, HP SPT/XL uses two different data collection techniques to provide the application programmer information on the two categories of resource consumption.
