Configuring Resource Manager [ HP Resource Sharing for MPE/iX ] MPE/iX 5.0 Documentation
HP Resource Sharing for MPE/iX
Configuring Resource Manager
With System Manager (SM) or Node Manager (NM) capabilities, you have
special RESMGR functions available to you. You will use these functional
areas to configure Resource Sharing on your system:
* Configuration
* System
Configuration Functions
Configuration functions let you examine and define the boundaries of the
shared disc environment. Configuration values are stored in the
PDCONFIG.PPC.SYS file, which is installed with the Resource Sharing
software.
There are two sets of function labels available when you choose Config
f3. Choose Other Keys f1 to switch between the two sets of labels. The
values set or displayed by these functions are explained in the
"Configuration Values" discussion and in Table 10-1.

System Functions
System functions give you control over both the configuration file
(PDCONFIG.PPC.SYS) and the share file (PDSHARE.PPC.SYS), and play a part
in the configuration process.
To modify the configuration file, you will use both the Configuration and
System areas of RESMGR. Use the Configuration functions to enter
configuration changes, and the System area Release Tables function to
enable all changes except for logon and file size. See "Enabling Your
Changes" in the following pages.
For more information on the other System functions, see "Deleting the
Configuration File" and "Deleting the Share File" later in this chapter.

Changing the Configuration
Follow this procedure to change the configuration of your shared disc
environment.
If you are changing the logon, see "Changing the Resource Sharing Logon,"
later in this chapter, for information and procedural steps.
To configure the shared disc environment on your
system:
1. At the RESMGR main screen, choose Config f3.
When you choose the Configuration function, RESMGR displays the
current contents of the configuration file.
2. Choose the appropriate function label to change a value. You may
need to switch to the other set of function labels by choosing
Other Keys f1. The configuration parameters are defined in
"Configuration Values" on the next page.
Each time you choose a function label to change a value, RESMGR
prompts:
New value (return for current value)?
3. You can press Enter to keep the current value, or enter a new one.
Determine the appropriate configuration values using Table 10-1.
4. Choose RESMGR Main f8 when you finish making changes to the
configuration file.
The program prompts:
WARNING - Use the System RELEASE TABLES function to enable the
config changes.
The Release Tables function is described in the "Enabling Your
Changes" section later in this chapter.

NOTE You do not need to release the tables when you modify the
logon.

Configuration Values
Here are the values available to set or display when you enter the
Configuration area of Resource Manager. Table 10-1, following, shows the
defaults, maximums and minimums for each value.
Connects Number of active connections to discs or devices per PC. Each
connection to a shared disc is one connect.
Open Files The maximum number of shared disc files that can be open at one
time per PC.
Default Config Sets the values in the configuration file to their defaults.
Current Config Displays the current contents of the configuration file or the
changes you have just entered. If you have made changes and not
used the Release Tables function, the displayed configuration
may not be in effect.
Logon Defines the logon string used by the server process when users
access the HP 3000. See "Changing the Resource Sharing Logon"
later in this chapter.
Shared Files Number of open files allowed per shared disc.
Locked Files Number of file locks allowed per shared disc.
Shared Discs Number of shared discs allowed to be actively connected on your
system.

Notes:
1 Select the value for open files that will accommodate the maximum number of
files any PC will need to have open at one time.
2 The number of shared files should be double the number of open files.
3 See "Changing the Resource Sharing Logon" later in this chapter.
Changing the Resource Sharing Logon
All users of shared discs and printers run under one Resource Sharing
common session. The default logon for the common session is:
Session Name = RESSHR
User Name = PCUSER
Account Name = SYS
Home Group = PPC
You can change the logon user, account, and group. For example, you must
add passwords to the logon if passwords have been previously defined in
MPE for the account, group, or user. See the "Resource Sharing Logon"
discussion in Chapter 4.
To tune your system for maximum efficiency, you can alter the priority of
PDSERVER by adding ;PRI=?? to the end of the logon string, where ?? can
be CS, DS, or ES. See "Altering Execution Priority" in Chapter 5.
To change the Resource Sharing logon:
1. Before you configure a new logon, make sure the user, group, and
account exist in MPE.
The Resource Sharing logon user needs the default capabilities
(IA, BA, SF, and ND). If any PC users will need shared discs on
nonsystem volume sets, the logon user also needs UV capability.
2. Run RESMGR as a user with SM or NM capability.
3. Choose Config f3.
4. Choose Logon f2. (You may have to choose OtherKeys to toggle
between two sets of labels in order to display the Logon label.)
5. Type the logon string.
The logon string consists of 1-80 characters in this format:
RESSHR,NEWUSER/SECRET.NEWACCT/CODE,NEWGROUP/KEY
The above example defines a new user, account, and group,
assigning a password at each level. The session name RESSHR is
included to help you identify the Resource Sharing common session
in MPE console messages and SHOWJOB listings.
6. Make other configuration changes, if desired, and choose RESMGR
Main f8 when you are finished.
Changes to the logon or file size parameter do not need to be
enabled. They take effect after you leave the Configuration area.

If using commands, at the SYSTEM> prompt enter:

LOGON [logon string]
________________________________________________________________________
NOTE If MPE passwords have been changed, the logon string must be
updated also, or users will be unable to make the connection.
Enabling Your Changes
If you change any configuration parameters other than the logon you need
to enable your changes by using the Release Tables function.
Before you use this function, make sure there are no users on the
network. If there are active users, an error message will display and
your changes will not be enabled. Wait until there are no active users,
then use the Release Tables function.
To use the Release Tables function:
1. Choose System f4.
2. Choose Release Tables f1.
RESMGR prompts:
This function shuts down all Resource Sharing services. Continue?
Y/N
3. Enter Y to release Resource Sharing's internal tables and
resources back to the system, and to enable the configuration
changes.
NOTE Remember, the changes you make at the Configuration screen modify
the configuration file (PDCONFIG.PPC.SYS) and do not take effect
automatically (except logon changes). To ensure that your
configuration changes are effective:
* Be sure there are no users on the network.
* Access the Configuration area and make your changes.
* Access the System area and choose Release Tables f1.
