Planning Shared Printers

Shared Printer Concepts

Document turnaround on spooled devices is dependent on the MPE spooler
load.

Documents queued to supported printers will print on the paper currently
loaded in the printer, regardless of the medium or its orientation.

The documents print using the default font (unless changed
programmatically) and do not allow the media changes possible with
hardwired printers.

Sharing printers is done in Resource Manager Utility (RESMGR) by someone
with SM or NM capability.

Recording Shared Printer Information on the Worksheet

The Shared Printers part of the HP 3000 Server Worksheet is included to
help you design your printer utilization for workgroups. By referring to
the following discussion and Figure 2-1 , you can see how a workgroup
might be set up.

Figure 2-6. Sample Worksheet, Shared Printers Part You need to plan or gather the following information: * Printer type or model number (device type or model number) * Name of the shared printer (sharename) * LDEV number for the shared printer (LDEV #) * MPE device class for the shared printer (MPE device class) * Password of the shared printer to restrict use (password) * Names of formatters or environments files that control printer output (formatter/environment) * Output priority and number of copies (output pri/# copies) Table 2-2. HP 3000 Server Worksheet--Printers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Field | Description | | | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Sharename | This represents the connection path to the shared printer. You type | | | the sharename when you configure the printer in RESMGR and when you | | | use connections on the PC. | | | | | | A sharename can be up to 8 characters long. The sharename could be | | | the device type (such as Laserjet), or the MPE device class (such as | | | LPT1), or some other unique user-defined name. (See Note 1.) | | | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | LDEV # | This is Logical Device number of the printer. This number can be up | | | to 3 digits long. (See Note 4). | | | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | MPE Device Class | This is the device class name (such as LP) for the printer. This | | | name can be up to 8 characters long. (See note 2.) (See Note 4). | | | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Password | A password is optional. You can indicate "yes" or "no" on the | | | worksheet to protect password security. The password can be looked | | | up on the system (SHARE PASSWORD) if you have SM capability. | | | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Formatter/ | This column refers to the name of a formatter or environment file. | | Environment | You can use up to 26 characters for the name of this file. (See Note | | | 3.) | | | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Output Pri/ | The output priority (0 to 14) and number of copies (1 to 65535). | | Number Copies | | | | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: 1 Printer sharenames perform the same function as disc sharenames. That is, they define a connection path. To simplify the printer sharename, use the MPE device class assigned to that printer as the sharename. This works best where there is only one printer from that device class. When you have two printers with the same MPE device class, assign a different sharename to one of them. 2 If you have several devices in one device class, spooled output will go to the first available device. If you want output to go to a specific device, use the LDEV number, or put that device in a unique device class. 3 See "Configuring a Formatter" and "Configuring an Environment File" in Chapter 10. 4 When configuring a printer you can either use the device name or the LDEV #.
