HP Predictive Support User's Guide Addendum for HP 3000 Series 900
Configuring the Internal Modem Port on the HP 3000/9x9KS Series
The CE or customer configures the Remote Console Port on HP 3000 9x9KS
Series systems. This sets up dialing in by modem for a session or for
remote console access.
All the HP 3000/9x9KS Series (and analogous HP-UX systems) come with an
internal 14.4K baud modem connected to the remote console port. Data
communications with this internal modem take place through the
LAN/Console Card Remote Console Port.
LAN/Console Card on MPE
The default LAN/Console Card Remote Console Port is configured as Logical
Device (Ldev) 21 on HP 3000/9x9KS systems. The Remote Console port is
normally configured for modem use as part of the HP Predictive Support
installation (See Appendix D, "Configuring the Datacomm Port," of the HP
Predictive Support User's Guide for HP 3000 Series 900.)
Configuring Ldev 21 on HP 3000/9x9KS Systems
In order for a dial-in session by modem to be recognized, logical device
21 must first be configured. This is so even if Predictive Support has
not been installed or configured.
Use SYSGEN to list the device configuration for each logical device
configured on the system.
1. In the IO submenu of SYSGEN, do a list path 10/4/0.1 (lpath
10/4/0.1) and ensure that the following information is shown.
io> lpath 10/4/0.1
PATH: 10/4/0.1 LDEV: 21
ID: A2372-60003-CONSOLE-TERMINAL TYPE: TERM
PMGR: CDM_CONSOLE_DM PMGRPRI: 9
LMGR: TIO_TLDM MAXIOS: 0
2. If the information is incorrect, delete device 21 before creating
the correct device information.
DD 21
3. If there is no information displayed for this device's
configuration, then add the necessary configuration information.
AD 21 ID=A2372-60003-CONSOLE-TERMINAL; PATH=10/4/0.1
_________________________________________________________________
NOTE If another device is configured with the PATH 10/4/0.1, it
should be reconfigured in one of two ways:
* With the Modify Device (MD) command, reconfigure the
device to use a different PATH. For example:
MD 22 ID=HPA2994A; PATH=10/4/0.3
* OR with Delete Device (DD) command, delete the
device's configuration from SYSGEN and Add Device
(AD) using the appropriate PATH. For example:
DD 22 ID=HPA2994A
AD 22 PATH=10/4/0.3; ID=HPA2994A
_________________________________________________________________
4. In the IO submenu of SYSGEN, do a list device 21 (LD 21) and
ensure that the following information is shown.
io> ld 21
LDEV: 21 DEVNAME: OUTDEV: 21 MODE: JAID
ID: A2372-60003-CONSOLE-TERMINAL RSIZE: 40 DEVTYPE: TERM
PATH: 10/4/0.1 MPETYPE: 16 MPESUBTYPE: 0
CLASS: TERM
Configuring the LAN/Console Card Remote Console Port
The remote console port on the LAN/Console card must also be configured
in NMMGR.
This procedure need only be carried out once by the customer or CE.
1. Run NMMGR from MANAGER.SYS.
The first screen is the Open Configuration/Directory File
Screen.
2. Press F1 Open Config to reach the Main screen.
3. Press F1 DTS to reach the Host Configuration screen.
4. Press F4 Go To UserPort to reach the HP Support Modem Port screen.
5. Modify the screen fields as shown below. (Line speed, as
appropriate, could be 19200, 9600, 2400, or 1200.)
Logical Device: 21
Line Speed: 9600
Modem: 1 [US Modem]
Parity: None
6. Press F6 Save Data
7. Position the cursor on the command line at the top of the screen
and validate DTS/LINK:
a. Press the Home key.
b. Type VALIDATE and press Enter.
c. Press "F2" (Validate DTS/LINK).
d. Press Return
Validating the DTS/LINK also cross-validates NMCONFIG with SYSGEN.
8. Exit NMMGR by returning through the prior screens, or type Exit at
the command line.
Any time a change is made to the system configuration in SYSGEN or NMMGR,
it is necessary to reboot the system in order for any changes to take
effect.
Getting to PDC (Processor Dependent Code) Command Mode:
1. Ensure that the switch on the right front of the 9x9KS machine is
turned to "Service." (The switch is marked "Standby," "On,"
"Service.")
2. Press CTRL B at the system console to display command mode (CM>)
prompt.
Selecting Either the Internal or External Modem
An external or internal modem can be used for dialout/dialin on a HP
3000/9x9KS system, however only one of these modems can be used at a
given time.
* The line speed between the internal modem and the system defaults
to 19,200 bits/sec and is not configurable.
* The line speed for the external modem can be configured at 19200,
9600, 2400, or 1200 bits/sec.
1. If the remote console is locked, unlock it using the UNLOCK REMOTE
(UR) command, before configuring access or enabling remote
console.
2. Configure the remote console port for the appropriate speed using
the Configure Access (CA) command. The following information is
displayed:
CM> CA
Current remote support modem port configuration:
Modem: Internal modem
Internal modem autoanswer: On
Bit rate: 19200 bits/sec
Protocol: Bell
System identification:
Do you wish to change the configuration? (Y/[N]):
3. If the port configuration needs to be changed, answer Y and enter
the appropriate information.
Enabling/Disabling Remote Console
For security reasons, dial-in for remote console access on MPE (and
HP-UX) systems is enabled by entering PDC Command Mode and issuing the
Enable Remote (ER) command.
* Enter the Enable Remote (ER) command to enable remote console.
CM> ER
* To disable a remote console connection, enter the Disable Remote
(DR) command.
CM> DR
NOTE The modem configuration switches are inaccessible on the HP
3000/9x9KS Series internal modem.
