Disc Space Measurements
The following graphs reflect disc usage:
* Disc Space.
* Disc Free Space.
* Disc Space Users.
* Disc Space-Transient (MPE XL)/Disc Space-Virtual (MPE V).
The following pages list variables for all disc graphs.
Table A-12. MPE XL Disc Space--Variables
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| |
| The Disc Space graph is a stacked graph that shows the total available disc space over |
| time and how it was used. |
| |
| Disc space use varies between MPE XL and MPE V systems. Free space may be free for |
| transient only, free for permanent files only, or free for transient or permanent |
| depending on the features of the operating system used. |
| |
| Y-Axis: Disc space in millions of sectors. Scaling is automatic. |
| |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Transient | The disc space that was in use by transient objects (data stacks, heaps, |
| | etc.). |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Free Tran | The total amount of disc space that was free for use by transient objects |
| Only | at the time of the daily collection. Permanent files are not allowed to |
| | use this free space. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Free | The total amount of disc space that was free for use by permanent files at |
| Tran/Perm | the time of the daily collection. Transient objects may use this area if |
| | they exceed the disc space reserved for transient only use. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Files | The total disc space that was in use by permanent disc files at the time |
| | of the daily data collection. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Table A-13. MPE V Disc Space--Variables
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| |
| The Disc Space graph is a stacked graph that shows the total available disc space over |
| time and how it was used. |
| |
| Disc space use varies between MPE XL and MPE V systems. On MPE V systems, disc space |
| uses are: Virtual memory swapping area, Free Virtual, Free Perm, Files. |
| |
| Y-Axis: Disc space in millions of sectors. Scaling is automatic. |
| |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Virtual | The disc space that was in use by virtual memory (data stacks and extra |
| | data segment swapping area). |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Free Virtual | The total amount of disc space that was free for use by virtual memory |
| | (MPE V) at the time of the daily collection. Permanent files are not |
| | allowed to use this free space. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Free Perm | The total amount of disc space that was free for use by permanent files at |
| | the time of the daily collection. Virtual memory is not allowed to use |
| | any of this area. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Files | The total disc space that was in use by permanent disc files at the time |
| | of the daily data collection. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Table A-14. Disc Free Space--Variables
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| |
| The Disc Free Space graph is a stacked graph. It displays overall disc free space |
| fragmentation over time by showing the total disc space available in contiguous pieces |
| of varying sizes. |
| |
| Size ranges are in sectors. |
| |
| Y-Axis: Total available (free) disc space in millions of sectors. Scaling is |
| automatic. The top line on the graph represents the total free space on the system at |
| the time of the daily data collection. |
| |
| For MPE V: The free space shown in this graph does not include the disc space that is |
| reserved for virtual memory (swapping area). For MPE XL: The free space shown |
| includes space free for use by permanent files plus free space that has been reserved, |
| but not specifically allocated for use by transient objects (swapping area). |
| |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| |
| Size ranges are in sectors of 256 bytes each. |
| |
| |
| 1 to 99 The total disc space, in millions of sectors comprising |
| contiguous free spaces ranging from 1 to 99 sectors in size. |
| |
| <1,000 The total disc space comprising contiguous free spaces ranging |
| from 100 to 999 sectors in size. |
| |
| <10,000 The total disc space comprising contiguous free spaces ranging |
| from 1,000 to 9,999 sectors in size. |
| |
| <100,000 The total disc space comprising contiguous free spaces ranging |
| from 10,000 to 99,999 sectors in size. |
| |
| >= 100,000 The total disc space comprising contiguous free spaces of |
| 100,000 or more sectors in size. |
| |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Table A-15. Disc Space Users--Variables
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| |
| Use the Disc Space Users graphs to display the permanent file space used by accounts |
| or disc groups over time. |
| |
| The two Disc Space Users graphs are: |
| * Busiest Disc Groups--This graph displays first when you select Disc Space |
| Users. It shows the top five users of disc space ranked in order of disc space |
| used. |
| * Individual Disc Group--This graph displays when you scroll down on the vertical |
| scroll bar. Disc groups or MPE accounts are listed in order from highest to |
| lowest average disc space usage. |
| |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Table A-16. Disc Space Users Graph 1--Variables
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| |
| The initial graph when Disc Space Users is drawn shows the amount of permanent disc |
| file space for the five accounts (or user-defined disc groups) that had the highest |
| average usage during the time period displayed. If more than five disc groups or |
| accounts are present, only the five with the highest average disc space usage during |
| the graph interval are displayed. This is a stacked graph. A second graph is |
| displayed when you scroll down on the vertical scroll bar. |
| |
| Y-Axis: Disc space in millions of sectors. Scaling is automatic. |
| |
| Note that the values shown on this graph are sampled once each day and do not |
| represent peak or average values over the day. The description of the collector PARM |
| file DAILYTIME directive in the HP LaserRX/MPE User's Manual: Collection Software |
| tells you how to control when this sample is taken each day. |
| |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Disc Group | For each user-defined disc group (or MPE account if no disc groups were |
| | defined) measurements represent the amount of disc space used for |
| | permanent files. Disc group labels on the graph are ranked from high to |
| | low disc space. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Table A-17. Disc Space Users Graph 2--Variables
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| |
| The second Disc Space Users graph shows the amount of permanent disc file space for an |
| individual account (or user-defined disc group). You can select the disc group to |
| display by using the vertical scroll bar. |
| |
| Y-Axis: Disc space in millions of sectors. Scaling is automatic. |
| |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Group | Indicates which account or user-defined group's data is being displayed on |
| | the graph. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Space Used | The disc space (in millions of sectors) being used by this user-defined |
| | group for permanent files. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Table A-18. Disc Space Transient (Virtual)--Variables
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| |
| The Disc Space Transient (Virtual) graph shows the Peak Transient (MPE XL) or Virtual |
| (MPE V) disc space used each day, the amount of disc space reserved for transient or |
| virtual space, and the amount of available disc space for permanent files. On MPE XL, |
| space for permanent files may also be used for transient space if necessary. |
| |
| Y-Axis: Disc space in millions of sectors. Scaling is automatic. The peak value on |
| this graph is sampled more frequently than once a day, but extremely short durations |
| of high disc space usage may not be properly reflected. |
| |
| Interpretation guidelines for this graph: |
| * When the available value equals the reserved value then no more permanent disc |
| space may be allocated. |
| * MPE V: When the peak value equals the reserved value then no more virtual |
| memory space can be allocated. |
| * MPE XL: Transient disc space can exceed the reserved value as long as it does |
| not exceed the available value. |
| * When the peak value equals the available value then no more permanent or |
| transient disc space may be allocated. |
| Note that peak may exceed available on this graph if the peak transient usage |
| occurred at a time of day when the available space was higher than at the daily |
| collection time. |
| |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Peak | MPE XL: The maximum size of transient disc space during the day. |
| | |
| | MPE V: The maximum size of virtual disc space during the day. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Reserved | The total amount of space that is reserved for use by transient or virtual |
| | memory. |
| | |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Available | The amount of disc space that is available for permanent files. This |
| (Perm) | value includes the amount of disc space reserved for transient (virtual) |
| | memory. |
| | |
