HP ARPA File Transfer Protocol User's Guide

Cannot Run FTP

Cannot Run FTP

   * Did you specify the correct filename.group.account to run the FTP
       user program:

            :FTP.ARPA.SYS

   * Check with your network administrator: The network and link(s)
       must be active.

Cannot Connect to the Remote Host

   * Did you enter the correct IP address or NS node name? See your
       network administrator.

   * Check with your network administrator to find out the following:

          * Does the remote host system support FTP?

          * Is the FTP server up and running on the remote host system?

          * Is the network link active on the remote host system?

          * If an NS node name was used, make sure it is correctly
entered in the network directory. If not, use the IP
              address.

Cannot Logon to Remote (MPE XL User)

   * If an MPE XL user cannot logon to the remote system, verify the
logon account and passwords are correct.

   * Try to log on from the remote system with the user's account and
       password(s).

User Cannot Log on to MPE XL

   * If a remote user accessing MPE XL cannot logon, verify that the
logon account and passwords are correct.

   * If you tried to log on from a system that supports prompting, try
to log on using the FTP USER command:

            ftp> USER session,user.account,group

   * Check that passwords are entered correctly. Passwords must be
       entered as follows:

       At the password prompt:

            userpass,acctpass,grouppass

or,as part of the logon string:

            ftp> USER sess,user/userpass.acct/acctpass,group/grouppass

NOTE: Passwords can only be entered once. For example, if the user
enters the account password in the USER command string, do not re-enter
it at the password prompt.

File Transfer Problems

For file transfer problems, first turn verbose and debug on.

   * Use the LS or DIR command to verify the file name spelling.

   * Check how file names are entered: some systems support both upper
and lower case file names. Some systems support characters in
file names that are not supported on MPE XL.

   * On MPE XL, using MPUT, resulting files are in upper case letters
(on non-MPE XL system). Use CASE command to force file names to
       lower case.

   * Supported file types: must be binary or ASCII, fixed or variable
       records.

   * Check the default file transfer type you are using. Enter:

            ftp> TYPE

   * Check the type of file you are transferring: Are you transferring
binary to ASCII? See Chapter 6 in this manual.

   * Check the size of records, and file types supported on the remote
host and MPE XL (see Chapter 6 in this manual for MPE XL).

Command Not Supported on Remote System

Use the FTP command REMOTEHELP to determine the supported server
commands on the remote host.
