HP DeskManager Administration

What Does Configuration Do?

Configuration is the process that sets up HP Desk's Directory of users
and fills the databases with information on how HP Desk will work on the
local computer and, if in a network, link to other computers running HP
Desk.

The configuration process is flexible, but can be summarized into the
following basic tasks:

   * Configuration of the Directory--countries, mailnodes, users, and
       also user capabilities.

   * Configuration of the local computer for HP Desk.

   * Configuration of routes to other computers in a network (see
       Chapter 10 ).

   * Configuration of gateways out of HP Desk and foreign address
       aliases (see Chapter 11 ).

   * Configuration of the HP Schedule components of HP DeskManagerPLUS

Your initial configuration should be performed using the Configurator, as
explained below. The Configurator enables you to configure the databases
interactively. For subsequent updating of the configuration and for
initial configuration of large systems, batch configuration is usually
more suitable. A number of methods of performing batch configuration are
provided (see Chapter 14 ).

Initial Configuration

The first time you configure HP Desk, you must run the Configurator while
logged on as the MGR user in the MAILDB group of the HPOFFICE account.
This enables you, after creating the databases, to configure the users of
the system including those who are to have administrative capability.

Subsequently in all but a few cases, any user with System Administrator,
Local Administrator, or Network Administrator capability can perform any
necessary amendment or updating of the configuration, subject to the
restrictions of their capability.

You'll be unlikely, in most cases, to be able to set up an initial
configuration that matches your needs exactly. So for simplicity, you
can safely accept the default values presented by the Configurator.

Be prepared to perform some later adjustment to your configuration once
HP Desk has been running for a few weeks in your installation. By then
you'll have had an opportunity to monitor both the usage reports produced
by the Maintenance program, and users' reactions to the configuration's
suitability.

Configuring for NewWave Mail and AdvanceMail

NewWave Mail and AdvanceMail (asynchronous versions) users are probably
not familiar with MPE and the procedure for logging on to the HP 3000.
The file LOGON.HPD is provided for these users to automatically log on.
When users first install NewWave Mail or AdvanceMail on their PC they
have to edit this file to include a valid MPE logon name and account. If
users do not need to log on to the HP 3000 for any other reason, it is
advisable to get a username and account set up just for PC users to log
on to. LAN users do not need to log on to the HP 3000.
