HP DeskManager Administration

Users

In addition to the people who will use HP Desk, the individual HP Desk
Administrators have to consider General Delivery, test users and the use
of native names.

General Delivery

When sizing the Global Database, each Administrator must add to the
number of conventional users:

   * One General Delivery for each hierarchically addressable location.

   * One General Delivery for each local mailnode.

Planning Test Users

The Network Co-ordinator can also decide to configure a dummy user on the
HP Desk system on each of the HP 3000s in the network. Once the network
is built, a message set to ACKNOWLEDGE RECEIVED can be sent to each of
the computers in the network everyday to check that the data
communication links are still working. If the message isn't received,
the HP Desk Administrator at the computer transmitting the message can
contact the HP Desk Administrator at the computer to which the message
was sent and find out if the problem is with the data communication line,
the computer or the HP Desk software.

Although test users are not a prerequisite for an operational HP
Desk system, they are a simple refinement which can help HP Desk
Administrators spot problems with mail transmission before a backlog of
undelivered mail can build up.

Native User Names

The USASCII user name is recognized throughout the HP Desk network and
can be interpreted by any computer. Where a computer has a native
database configured containing non-USASCII user names, mail can be
dispatched or delivered by means of these native names. Mail addressed
in this way, that is intended for onward transmission beyond the local
computer, will have the name of the addressee converted to USASCII.
