HP DeskManager Administration
Chapter 1 Your Organization and HP Desk Administration
This chapter provides an initial overview of HP Desk and is divided into
the following sections:
* HP Desk Administration Tasks
* The HP Desk Administrator
* Supporting Users
* Important Contacts
Whatever the size of your computer installation and whatever the
structure of your organization, HP Desk administration will form only
part of the management of your system. The actual system management
roles established in your organization will be based on local and network
considerations.
This manual refers to the following roles in an organization:
* System Manager
* Network Co-ordinator
* Programmers
* Users
The System Manager is responsible for an HP 3000, or a network of HP
3000s. This person is a computer professional who
co-ordinates the network, the MPE accounting
structure, data security, and the organization's
contact with Hewlett-Packard. They are the final
point of reference in the organization regarding
any operational aspect of the HP 3000.
The System Manager is ultimately responsible for HP
Desk, has probably been involved in office
automation planning within your organization, and
should be at least involved in the implementation
of the system. Where security is important they
may need to take on some HP Desk administration
tasks.
The Network is responsible for standards in a computer network
Co-ordinator and liaises with the System Managers of individual
computers. In an HP Desk network the Network
Co-ordinator plans the network, the co-ordination
of routes between computers and the directories of
users to ensure mail passes around the network.
The Programmer writes application programs specific to an
organization's needs and the installation's
requirements. They may write programs to interface
or integrate with HP Desk and work with the System
Manager.
Users are people who use software, in this case HP Desk.
Users of HP Desk may control the set up of their HP
Desk account by changing their User Profile and
write their own applications for use with HP Desk.
