HP DeskManager Administration

Operator Command Formats

This section lists in alphabetical order all the commands available. For
each command, the following format is shown:

SYNTAX shows the format of the command including any of
                      the required parameters.

NOTES describes the command in detail and related special
                      considerations.

EXAMPLE shows the command in use. Each example assumes
that the command has been issued from the console,
although this does not necessarily have to be the
                      case.

                      __________________________________________________

NOTE The times shown in the following examples are
approximate. The time taken for any given
command to be executed depends on the size of
                            your HP Desk system.

DISABLEMTRUCK

Dynamically disables a Master Truck.

Syntax

      DISABLEMTRUCKS n

Notes

This instructs the Transport Manager to mark Master Truck n as "hung",
release the computer and mailnode from it and instruct it to shutdown.

Use this command to free a mailnode blockage when a hung truck is
detected. Optionally replace the hung truck by starting another truck
dynamically using the command STARTMTRUCKS.

When the hung truck is shutdown and its status cleared by the Transport
Manager, it is able to be restarted. In the case that the hung truck is
not shutdown or its status cleared then it is not available until the
Transport system is restarted.

The value of n ranges between 0 and 35 for Master Truck identifiers, as
they appear in the Mailstatus report.

     DISABLEMTRUCK 2

Disable hung Master Truck request sent to the Transport Manager

MAILALTLOCSTATS

Indicates the size of various data sets and enables them to be changed if
necessary.

Syntax

      MAILALTLOCSTATS

Notes

The LOCSTATS file contains details of the current size of various data
sets. The MAILALTLOCSTATS command allows you to look at the contents of
this file and alter the values, without having to purge the databases
first.

You will expect to use MAILALTLOCSTATS when the database is expanded as a
batch job. Full details of this procedure are in the installation
instructions.

You should also use this command if you expand your databases using
ADAGER or DBCHANGE. If you expand the databases in this way, the LOCSTATS
file will not reflect the actual sizes of the data sets. You can adjust
the recorded values using the MAILALTLOCSTATS command.

MAILBINEMPTY

Starts the Bin Emptier process in HP DeskManagerPLUS.

Syntax

      MAILBINEMPTY

Notes

The Bin Emptier is the HP DeskManagerPLUS process provided to perform
Maintenance functions. The function of the Waste Bin Emptier is to
release users Waste Baskets for deletion from the HP DeskManagerPLUS
database. This program would normally be run at the end of the day.
Users who sign on to their HP Desk accounts after the Bin Emptier process
has run, will find that their Waste Baskets appear empty. The physical
contents of their Waste Basket, however still exist on the database, but
will be deleted later by the Garbage Collector.

The Bin Emptier can be scheduled using the MAILSCHEDULE command.

     MAILBINEMPTY

Start Process request sent to the HPDESK Supervisor.

     End of Program

MAILBUILDNATIVE

MAILBUILDNATIVE allows the Native Database to be built or purged in an
existing HP Desk system without affecting the Local and Global Databases.

Syntax

      MAILBUILDNATIVE

Notes

If native (non-USASCII) user names are to be used, a separate database
must be created to hold these. This database, the Native Database can be
added to an existing HP Desk system by using the MAILBUILDNATIVE command.

Use MAILALTLOCSTATS to define the maximum number of native user names you
want to cater for. If there was previously no Native Database the value
shown will be 0. After entering the new value, MAILBUILDNATIVE will
build the Native Database. A database report is displayed indicating
that this has been successfully completed it has been built.

If a Native Database was in existence and the MAILALTLOCSTATS value was
set at 0, this operation will delete the database. For a non-zero entry,
the previous database will be purged and a new one built of the
appropriate size. In either case, a warning is given that a Native
Database exists and confirmation sought that you wish to proceed.

MAILCANCELABORT

Cancels a previously executed MAILUSERABORT command.

Syntax

      MAILCANCELABORT

Notes

This command allows the cancellation of a MAILUSERABORT command. It will
be effective only within the time the MAILUSERABORT program has paused
before executing the abort of the users (which is 10 minutes by default).

The MAILCANCELABORT command cannot be used to stop users being aborted
during any of the following administration jobs:

   *   The Maintenance job
   *   The Mailstore job
   *   The Mailrestore job
   *   The Mailload job
   *   The Mailunload job

This is because the program which aborts users is being run explicitly by
these jobs and not as a process under the Supervisor.

MAILDSSLAVEOFF

Disables only the DS Slave Trucks.

Syntax

      MAILDSSLAVEOFF

Notes

The MAILDSSLAVEOFF command disables DS Slave Trucks on the system, so
that any further communication from HP Desk systems will be disallowed.
On an HP DeskManagerPLUS system running NS transport, the command will
not affect NS Slave Trucks.

MAILLOAD

Loads the HP Desk databases from tape.

Syntax

      MAILLOAD

Notes

CAUTION On no account should DBLOAD.PUB.SYS be invoked manually to load the database.
The MAILLOAD command is used to load the HP Desk databases from the tapes to which they were unloaded with the MAILUNLOAD command. The MAILLOAD command is normally issued after running the Configuration program to purge and rebuild the databases, to increase the capacities, or to recover from a database corruption. The MAILLOAD command checks that the databases are not currently being accessed. If they are, the command terminates and displays: Database in use - command not allowed If the databases are not in use, further access to them is inhibited and the following message is displayed: Database load begins on [date] at [time] The MAILLOAD command streams LOADNATV.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE to run the DBUTIL program to erase the Native Database, if one exists. The DBLOAD utility program is then run to copy the unloaded data from the Native tape back into the empty Native Database. The LOADNATV job then streams LOADGLOB.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE to repeat the procedure for the Global Database. The LOADGLOB job then streams LOADLOCL.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE to repeat the procedure for the Local Database. Therefore, the database tapes need to mounted onto the machine in the following order: Native Database tape, Global Database tape and then the Local Database tape. To verify that databases have been loaded properly, carefully examine the listings from the LOADNATV, LOADGLOB and LOADLOCL jobs. MAILLOAD Database load begins on 06.06.92 at 1441 END OF PROGRAM : 14:41/#J34/64/LOGON FOR : MAILOAD,MGR.HPOFFICE,MAILDB ON LDEV #10 14:42/#J34/64/FROM/MGR.HPOFFICE/Mount GLOBAL unload tape ?14:42/#J35/66/LDEV# FOR "DBLOAD" ON TAPE (NUM)? =REPLY 66,7 14:48/#J35/67/LOGON FOR : MAILLOAD,MGR.HPOFFICE,MAILDB ON LDEV #10 14:58/#J34/64/FROM/MGR.HPOFFICE/HPDESK GLOBAL database load complete 15:00/#J34/64/FROM/MGR.HPOFFICE/Mount LOCAL unload tape ?15:02/#J35/70/LDEV# FOR "DBLOAD" ON TAP (NUM)? =REPLY 70,7 15:10/#J35/67/FROM/MGR.HPOFFICE/HPDESK LOCAL database load complete 15:12/#J35/67/LOGOFF ON LDEV #10 MAILMAINT Runs the Maintenance jobs which tidies up the HP Desk system and produces a backup copy of the databases. Syntax MAILMAINT Notes The Maintenance Program is split up into three separate jobs: * The first job (MAILMAIN.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE) logs users off and shuts down HP Desk. It then rebuilds the communications files for the Mailroom and the Transport Manager. * The second job (MNTSTORE.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE) stores the databases and associated files. * The third job (MAILMNT2.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE) performs garbage collection, checks on the structure of the databases, produces reports, recalculates the sizes of users' Filing Cabinets Work Areas, and then starts up HP Desk again. As each job finishes, it streams the next one. When HP Desk is first installed, all three jobs execute as MGR.HPOFFICE. The store job requires OP capability to run because it has to handle privileged files. Therefore, MGR.HPOFFICE is given OP capabilities. If you don't want this user to have such wide-ranging capabilities, you can move the store job to another user and account which already has OP capabilities (OPERATOR.SYS for example). If you decide to move the store job, you will have to alter the following lines as shown: * In MAILMAIN.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE, you will have to change the line which reads: !mailstream mntstore to indicate the user and account that MNTSTORE will run in. For example, if you move MNTSTORE to OPERATOR.SYS, you would have to change the line to read: !stream mntstore.operator.sys You have to use the STREAM command because the MAILSTREAM command only works on files within MAILJOB.HPOFFICE for security reasons. * In MNTSTORE.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE, you will have to change the line which reads: !job maintjob, mgr.hpoffice, maildb to indicate the user and account this job will run in. For example, if you move MNTSTORE to OPERATOR.SYS, you will have to change the line to read: !job maintjob, operator.sys * You will also have to change the line in MNTSTORE which reads: !store !storlist.maillib;*mailstor;show to indicate the new group and account in which STORLIST resides. If STORLIST is moved to the MAILJOB group of the SYS account, the line would read: !store !storlist.mailjob;*mailstor;show You can customize the Maintenance job in the following ways: * You can change the default time and message parameters provided for the user abort in MAILMAIN.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE. * You can alter the MAILON command issued at the end of MAILMNT2.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE if you want to start up any more than the default number of Master Trucks (the default is 1). If you don't want to start up all of HP Desk, you can replace the MAILON command with other commands which only start up selected parts of HP Desk (the Mailroom, for example). * You can set the CONCURRENT JCW in MAILMNT2.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE to on to enable the user interface once the databases and associated data files have been stored off. This minimizes the amount of time HP Desk is unavailable to users. * You can change two JCWs in MAILMNT2.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE to alter the presentation of the maintenance reports. Setting the QUICKLIST JCW to on suppresses MREPORT. Setting SHORTLIST to on causes any lines composed entirely of zeros to be suppressed when MREPORT is produced. * You can set the STATISTICS JCW in MAILMNT2.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE to on if you want to collect and store the data for network statistics. MAILMAINT streams the file MAILMAIN.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE to perform the various maintenance functions. When complete, up to three files are printed to the system line printer: * MERRQUE - the headers of items in the Error Queue (not printed if Error Queue is empty). * MERROR - database errors (not printed if there are no errors). * MREPORT - a summary report.
NOTE The MAILCANCELABORT command cannot be used to stop users being aborted by the Maintenance program. This is because, in this case the program which aborts users is being run explicitly by the Maintenance program and not as a process under of the Supervisor.
An example Mailmaint command might be: :MAILMAINT Start Process request sent to HPDesk Supervisor END OF PROGRAM : 22:22/#J26/28/HPDESK - MAINT job started on 06.06.92 at 2222 22:22/#J31/58/LOGON FOR;MAINTJOB.MGR.HPOFFICE,MAILDB ON LDEV #10 22:23/#J31/55/HPDesk maintenance job started Once HP Desk is shut down, the first maintenance job logs off all users who are still using HP Desk and the streams the second job: 22:32/#J26/31/HPDESK User sessions will be automatically aborted in 2 MINUTES 22:33/#J26/31/HPDESK User sessions will be automatically aborted in 1 MINUTE 22:34/#J26/31/HPDESK User sessions now being aborted 22:36/#J12/48/LOGOFF ON LDEV #20 22:36/#J20/46/LOGON FOR :MAINTJOB,MGR.HPOFFICE,MAILDB ON LDEV #10 22:37/#J35/40/LOGOFF ON LDEV #10 You are then asked to mount a tape, or cartridge depending on the size of your computer in the tape drive.
