Preface
This document presents a series of guidelines for use in tuning the
performance of your ALLBASE/SQL F.0 system. These guidelines are
applicable for the MPE/iX 4.0 release and for the HP-UX 8.0 and 9.0
releases. Chapters are as follows:
* "Basic Concepts in ALLBASE/SQL Performance" describes some
internal concepts in very basic terms to make understanding the
guidelines easier.
* "Guidelines on Logical and Physical Design" describes the
performance implications of database design and file storage for
user tables and indexes.
* "Guidelines on Query Design" shows how to build queries that are
most likely to use indexed access.
* "Guidelines on Transaction Design" describes techniques for
avoiding conflicts among transactions to obtain the greatest
concurrency.
* "Guidelines on System Administration" presents techniques for
improving performance in the following areas:
* DBA Guidelines
* Network Guidelines
* HP-UX Guidelines
* MPE/iX Guidelines
* An appendix, "Design for a High-Performance Table Editor,"
sketches an approach to table editing that avoids concurrency
problems and promotes high performance through the use of BULK
operations.
Additional basic information relating to performance is found in the
following chapters in the ALLBASE/SQL document set:
* "Logical Design" and "Physical Design" in the ALLBASE/SQL Database
Administration Guide.
* "Concurrency Control" in the ALLBASE/SQL Reference Manual.
* "Transaction Management with Multiple DBEnvironment Connections"
in the ALLBASE/SQL Release F.0 Application Programming Bulletin.
* "Processing with Cursors" in the ALLBASE/SQL application
programming guide for your programming language.
