SORT-MERGE/XL General Users Guide

Using the Terminal as the Output File

It is possible to enter the SORT/XL subsystem, issue a series of
commands, and have the results of the sort operation immediately
displayed on your terminal screen. This process eliminates the need of
going into EDIT/V, calling up the file, and listing its contents to see
the results of a sort operation. To use the terminal as the output
device use the $STDLIST parameter of the SORT/XL >OUTPUT command.

The following example shows how to sort the file EMPLOYEE based on a
single key. The results are displayed on the terminal screen when you
enter the >END command.

          :SORT

          :

When you designate the terminal as the output file ($STDLIST), the system
does not generate a system file or keep any permanent record of the sort
results.
