Viewing Spool Files - the PRINTSPF Utility
The PRINTSPF utility is another method for viewing spool files. Unlike a
text editor such as EDIT/3000, PRINTSPF has the additional benefit of
displaying special formatted spool file records, including control
characters. You may wish to view control characters when you are
debugging a problem or communicating with a Hewlett-Packard support
representative. The general form of the PRINTSPF utility is:
PRINTSPF filename
or
PRINTSPF "[FILE=]filename [[;START=]startrec] [[;END=]endrec]
[[;WIDTH=]linewidth] [;NUM]"
If you use more than only the spool file name, parametric data following
the word PRINTSPF must be enclosed in quotes as in the examples.
Refer to chapter 6 for more information about PRINTSPF.
Although the purpose of PRINTSPF is to display formatted spool files, it
may also be used with other file types. If it is used on another file
type, it displays the contents just as the PRINT command would.
Only users with SM capability may display private spool files.
Pressing CTRL Y stops the display.
Viewing an entire spool file
Suppose that you are the creator of the output spool file
O357.OUT.HPSPOOL. To examine the entire contents of the spool file at
your terminal screen, enter:
PRINTSPF O357
Suppose that you have SM capability and you want to view input spool file
I409.IN.HPSPOOL. To examine its entire contents at your terminal screen,
enter:
PRINTSPF "FILE=I409"
NOTE Input spool files are private. Only users with SM capability can
use PRINTSPF to view private spool files.
Viewing a select number of records
To examine at your terminal screen the first 20 records of your output
spool file, enter:
PRINTSPF "O357;START=1;END=20"
NOTE ;START=1 is not needed in this case because 1 is the default if
;START is omitted.
You may also use the SPIFF utility to view selected records.
SPIFF
> TEXT spool file
> LIST 0/19
To examine at your terminal screen the last 15 records of your output
spool file, enter:
PRINTSPF "O357;START=-15"
To examine records 40 through 50 at your terminal screen, enter:
PRINTSPF "O357;START=40;END=50"
Numbering the lines and setting the width
To request that display lines be 60 characters wide and to number the
lines, enter:
PRINTSPF "O357;WIDTH=60;NUM"
NOTE In the above examples, if you qualify the spool file name with the
group and account (.IN.HPSPOOL for input spool files and
.OUT.HPSPOOL for output spool files), the system does not search
your logon group and account prior to searching the IN or OUT group
of the HPSPOOL account for the spool file. Using a fully qualified
spool file name is more efficient.
