Scheduling Shutdowns
The computer is a tool that people rely on to do their jobs. If you take
it away from them without warning, you are likely to have irritated
people. To provide the best service to your computer users:
* Plan a regular shutdown schedule that is convenient for the
majority of computer users.
* Let everyone know what the schedule is ahead of time.
Scheduled shutdowns frequently coincide with system backups because users
must stop using the computer. As you read this chapter, notice that the
steps you take to shut down the system are nearly identical to those
needed to prepare for a backup.
To include shutdown information in the WELCOME message
You should include shutdown information in the daily WELCOME message.
This way, users know what to expect as soon as they log on to the
computer, and can plan their work accordingly.
Below is an example of an informative WELCOME message. It is clear,
concise, and lets people know that they can call you if the shutdown
schedule presents a problem.
