Performing System Operation Tasks

Preparing For the Backup

A file cannot be backed up while someone is adding to or changing
information. For this reason, everyone should save their files before
you begin the backup.

Preparing for a backup is very similar to preparing for a system
shutdown: the object is to stop nearly all computer activity, and, in
particular, to prevent people from using the computer.

When you are through with the backup, you have a set of labeled tapes
containing the most current computer information.

To prepare for the backup

To prepare for the backup, you need the following things:

   * Tapes (reel or DDS). The number of tapes you need depends upon
whether you are doing a full or partial backup, and how much
       information your computer stores.

   * Write rings for each reel tape you are using.

   * Tape labels for each tape you use.
