Lesson 7 More Information

Lesson 7 presents useful sources of information.

Sometimes things simply do not go the way that you that expect.

Logon problems

One day when you try to log on, you may get this message:

     CAN'T INITIATE NEW SESSIONS NOW

The most likely explanation is that the system operator or system manager
has reduced the job/session limit on your system. The operator or
manager can restrict the number of jobs and sessions that the computer
can accept.

Your system might be due for periodic maintenance and backup. The
operator or manager might be using a program that requires large amounts
of the computer's capacity. At such times, having too many jobs and
sessions competing for the computer's attention could slow everything
down.

If you get that message when you try to log on, talk to your account
manager or your system operator. Ask when the job/session limit will be
raised.

General user references

Here are two good sources of information about all of the commands you
are likely to use.

   *   the MPE/iX Commands Reference Manual (32650-60002)

   * the online help facility (see lesson 8)

The reference manual.

MPE/iX Commands Reference Manual (32650-60002)

Your system manager may have a copy of this. If not, the manual can be
ordered through your Hewlett-Packard sales representative.

   * It provides considerable detail about commands and how to use
       them.

   * It has a detailed reference to all of the standard commands
available in MPE/iX; they are listed alphabetically.

   * It presents command files and user-defined commands (UDCs).

Module 6 in this tutorial introduces command files. UDCs are
presented in the 900 Series HP 3000: Advanced Skills course.

The online help facility

The help facility comes with your MPE/iX system. It also presents
information on all of the system commands.
