Chapter 10  Data File Conversion 

ASCII files need no conversion.  Binary (unformatted) files are also
compatible except for floating-point items (of type REAL, DOUBLE
PRECISION, COMPLEX, or DOUBLE COMPLEX). Binary files containing reals in
the MPE V format can be used without any conversion if the program is
compiled specifying HP3000_16 REALS or HP3000_16 ON. If you want full
native mode floating-point performance, you should convert the binary
files to IEEE floating-point format, as explained below.
