Chapter 4 Communication Area and Switches The Communication Area The HP ALLBASE/4GL communication area contains a number of fields that both you and the system can access. The communication area fields are either alterable fields or read-only fields. You can use the contents of all the communication area fields for display on screens, in reports, or in processes and functions. The value in any communication area field can be passed to an external program via the EXTERNAL logic command. You can reference a substring of any alphanumeric communication area field by using the substring referencing rules. The following paragraphs explain the characteristics of each communication area field.
