Preparing to Restore Files

Since restoring files involves the use of one or more tapes on a tape
device, you must complete the following three steps before issuing the
RESTORE command:

   * Locate the necessary backup file or files.

   * Check for duplicate file names.

   * Prepare the tape and the tape device.

Locate the Necessary File or Files

Search your tape library for the STORE tape(s) containing the files you
want to restore. If you do not know where the tape file(s) are, you can
use the RESTORE command to list the contents of the tape. Refer to "When
RESTORE is Complete", later in this chapter.

Checking for Duplicate File Names

Before you RESTORE a file from a STORE tape, check whether a disk file
with the same name already exists. If a file with the same name resides
in the account and group you are restoring to, the disk file is
overwritten by the backup file during the RESTORE process by default.

CAUTION If you do not wish to lose current disk files with the same fully qualified file names as the files you are restoring, use the KEEP parameter of the RESTORE command.
To check for duplicate filenames, use the LISTF command for each file you intend to RESTORE. For example: :LISTF filename.groupname.accountname Use wildcard characters to represent a set of files. Refer to "Using Wildcard Characters", in Chapter 5, "Storing Files," for details. For example, the following LISTF command lists all files in the PUB group of the RESEARCH account: :LISTF @.PUB.RESEARCH If at least one file exists, the system prints the filename at your terminal. If files matching the search criteria do not exist, the system prints the message: NON-EXISTENT FILE (CIERR 907) Preparing the Media and the Backup Device Prepare the STORE tape following the instructions in Chapter 3, "Preparing Storage Devices." Make sure that you protect the files on the tape by removing the write ring. Mount the STORE tape on your tape device.
