Silhouette Reference Manual

Chapter 1  Introduction

Silhouette dynamically duplicates TurboIMAGE databases simultaneously on
multiple HP 3000 systems. This allows high system availability, database
access during system backup, and improved system performance through load
balancing.

The HP 3000 system that performs processing on the original database is
known as the primary system. The HP 3000 system duplicating the database
is known as the secondary system. There can be one or multiple primary
or secondary systems. Silhouette duplicates the databases from the
primary system(s) over data communications lines to the secondary
system(s). The data communications lines can be either local or remote.

This chapter introduces you to Silhouette, and includes information on:

 *  Silhouette Functions

 *  Silhouette Network Applications

 *  How Silhouette Works

Figure 1-1 shows Silhouette duplicating a TurboIMAGE database from a
primary system over a data communications line to a secondary system.
