Introducing Applied Computerized Telephony (ACT) API 4.0

by May Lee
Grenoble Networks Division-Cupertino

The 4.0 version of the Hewlett-Packard Applied Computerized Telephony
(ACT) Application Programming Interface (API) is available first time
with this MPE/iX release. The new API offers new call processing
functions for the AT&T PBX platform but can also be used with the other
platforms supported by ACT.

Hewlett-Packard ACT products provide the ability to integrate voice and
data technologies. The advanced call processing capabilities of modern
telephone systems can now be combined with the open application
environment of Hewlett-Packard computers through an intelligent
switch-to-computer interface.

The ACT solution consists of an ACT Call Processing (CP) Server and an
ACT API. The ACT CP Server provides the link between the computing
environment and the telephony environment by interfacing and managing
communication between the two. The ACT API facilitates the integration
of these new advanced call processing capabilities into existing or new
applications.

The ACT APIs are designed to provide a simple means for the application
programmer to incorporate call processing functions into their
applications. The API shields the programmer from the complex
telephone-switch-dependent communication protocols and the differences
among the different types of switches. It also shields the programmer
from lower level interprocess communication protocols required to
communicate with the ACT CP Server.
