Chapter 7 Networking/Client-Server

MPE/iX 5.0 ARPA Services and ThinLAN 3000/iX Network Link Software

by Frank Rowand
Commercial Systems Division

Product Overview

HP recognizes that our customers have a growing need for systems
interoperability. Therefore we are providing a networkable system that
meets industry standards. The Fundamental Operating System (FOS) has
been restructured to include several networking products that previously
had to be ordered separately, plus a new networking product.

Beginning with the MPE/iX 5.0 General Release, the following network
products are included in the FOS:

   * ThinLAN 3000/iX Network Link software (product number 36923A
       software options)

   * Host-based ARPA Services, including HP ARPA File Transfer Protocol
       (product number 36957A)

   *   TELNET/iX Client

The industry standard ARPA protocols enable the HP 3000 to be network
ready and better positioned for client/server and multivendor networking.

The ThinLAN Link software and the ARPA services added to the FOS include
the following features:

   * ARPA TCP, UDP, and IP protocols

   * BSD sockets API, providing access to TCP and UDP

   * HP NetIPC API, providing access to TCP

   * Support of the Ethernet and IEEE 802.3 protocols

   * Name Server Client Routines, providing host-to-IP address mapping

   * Integrated network management agent software that supports SNMP

   * Outbound TELNET connections through TELNET/iX Client

   * Incoming virtual terminal server, providing inbound Network
       Services Virtual Terminal (NS VT)

   * ARPA File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

When TELNET/iX Server (which provides inbound TELNET connections) becomes
available at the end of 1995, it will be included in the FOS.

The ThinLAN Link hardware options (802.3 CIO LAN card and 802.3 HP-PB LAN
card) can still be ordered. The ThinLAN 3000/iX Network Link software
options and HP ARPA File Transfer Protocol can be ordered for systems
that have not updated to the MPE/iX 5.0 General Release.

Documentation

The following manuals that provide planning, configuration, and
operations information have been added to the System Management Core
Manual Set (36367A):

       Manager's Guide (36957-61001)

   *   HP TELNET/iX Client User's Guide (36957-90152)

Other manuals that provide additional information can be ordered as
needed:

Important Information

Following are some additional details to be aware of:

   * Prior to the MPE/iX 5.0 General Release, you must still purchase
the ThinLAN 3000/iX Network Link (software option) and the HP ARPA
File Transfer Protocol. The price of these products has been
reduced by 50% as of October 1, 1994.

   * Inbound virtual terminal server, providing inbound NS VT, is
included in the ThinLAN Link software. This provides logon access
to the HP 3000 over a PC LAN connection without having to purchase
       NS3000/iX Network Services.

   * Outbound NS VT (virtual terminal) is not included in the FOS.
Outbound virtual terminal is available in the FOS through the HP
TELNET/iX Client and in the NS3000/iX Network Services (36920A)
       product through NS VT.

Support

The software that is added to the FOS is supported under the FOS support
contract. Software support for ThinLAN 3000/iX Link and HP ARPA File
Transfer Protocol should be removed from your support contract after you
install the MPE/iX 5.0 General Release.
