COMMUNICATOR 3000 MPE/iX General Release 5.0 (Core Software Release C.50.00)
SCSI and HP-IB CD-ROM Drives
by Ruben Gallegos and Alex Trujillo
Commercial Systems Division
With the availability of HP 3000 MPE/iX software on CD, MPE/iX now
supports a new CD-ROM drive, the Toshiba XM-3401TX. This drive may be
purchased as an integrated CD-ROM drive into the SPU (A3086A which can be
installed at the factory, by a CE at the site, or installed at the site
with no CE), or as part of the upgrade kit for the Series 6000 peripheral
package (C3560U). This drive replaces the HP Series 6100 Model 700/S SCSI
CD-ROM which is still supported but not purchasable as a standalone
CD-ROM drive (A1999A). To protect the investment of customers who signed
up for HP LaserRelease Program for MPE V systems, the HP-IB CD-ROM drive
(C1707A) is also supported on MPE/iX. While still supported, this drive
is no longer orderable from Hewlett-Packard.
CD-ROM drives cannot be configured into systems running MPE/iX releases
prior to MPE/iX Release 4.0.
CD-ROM and HPINSTAL
Beginning with MPE/iX Release 4.0, your supported CD-ROM drives can read
user-volume formatted CD-ROM disks. Now you can perform software updates
or distribution of MPE/iX Release 4.5, 5.0, and subsequent releases from
CD-ROM. The CD-ROM and the new software installation tool, HPINSTAL,
offer these new and improved installation advantages:
* Automated software distribution from a central site to multiple
remote sites
* No system downtime for CSLT creation
* Lower software support costs
For more information on HPINSTAL and the benefits it provides, refer to
the articles "Introducing HP MPE/iX Software on CD" and "Introducing
HPINSTAL/iX for the HP 3000" in Chapter 3 of this Communicator.
CD-ROM and PC Application Access
Beginning with MPE/iX Release 5.0, the supported CD-ROM drives can also
be accessed from your PC applications, such as HP LaserROM, allowing you
to utilize your CD-ROM drive for both MPE and PC applications. These HP
CD extensions provide some new benefits and capabilities:
* Share the CD-ROM drive between MPE and PC applications
* Reduce your cost for support materials when ordering with CD
options
* LaserROM documentation utility available on the network to PC
clients running MS-Windows 3.1

product, refer to the article titled "Introducing CD Extensions for
MPE/iX" in this Communicator.
