COMMUNICATOR 3000 MPE/iX Release 5.0 (Core Software Release X.50.20)

Autoinstall and DDS Firmware Problem

by Lori Orvek
Commercial Systems Division

The purpose of this article is to document a problem with firmware
revision 7.11 for the DDS device which may prevent an update to MPE/iX
Release 5.0.

The firmware revision 7.11 for the HPC1503B/HPC1520B DDS device has a
defect which will prevent some files from being restored from CMSTORE
format tapes, specifically the FOS and SUBSYS tapes. As a result of this
defect, an AUTOINSTALL from this device may fail and the spoolfile output
of the restore will show an error message similar to "UNEXPECTED END OF
FILE MARKER FOUND (S/R 9060)".

This problem does NOT affect most HPC1503B/HPC1520B DDS devices. It
does, however, affect the HPC1503B and HPC1520B DDS devices which are on
revision 7.11.

It's important that you identify any devices with this firmware revision
BEFORE attempting to update to MPE/iX Release 5.0. To identify if your
HPC1503B or HPC1520B DDS devices are affected, type the following
commands for each HPC1503B or HPC1520B DDS device configured on your
system:

     :Sysdiag
     DUI> scsidds;ldev={!!ldev # of DDS drive!!};section=50
     SCSIDDS> rev
     SCSIDDS> exit
     DUI> exit

If the firmware revision displayed is 7.11, do NOT proceed with the
upgrade to MPE/iX 5.0 until after the device firmware has been upgraded.
To upgrade the device firmware, contact your Hewlett-Packard Support
Representative.

If the firmware revision displayed is other than 7.11, your DDS device is
not affected and you can proceed with the upgrade to MPE/iX 5.0.
