Chapter 6 Application Development

Introducing ALLBASE/REPLICATE

by Karen Poeschel
Commercial Systems Division

A new product, ALLBASE/REPLICATE, can be used with ALLBASE/SQL G.0 to
replicate a DBEnvironment on the same system or another system on an
existing network. ALLBASE/REPLICATE allows you to solve a number of
problems that involve replicating all or portions of one DBEnvironment
into another DBEnvironment.

In a replicate environment, one DBEnvironment is defined as a master DBE
and the other DBEnvironment is defined as a slave DBEnvironment. Running
the ALLBASE/REPLICATE application allows transactions that are committed
on the master DBEnvironment to be replicated on the slave DBEnvironment.
The transactions replicated can be for the whole master DBEnvironment
or a subset of tables of the master DBEnvironment. Using the
ALLBASE/REPLICATE application, you can solve problems such as:

   * Maintaining a "standby" DBEnvironment in case the master DBE
       becomes inaccessible.

   * Improving the performance of the primary system by offloading some
read-only applications to one or more "shadow" systems.

   *   Performing database backups remotely.

The ALLBASE/REPLICATE product consists of an application and a call level
interface. If a custom solution is desired, the call level interface can
be used to develop a replicate application.
