Chapter 2 System Information/Before You Install
MPE/iX Release 5.0 Disk Space Requirements
by Celeste Y. Crocker
Commercial Systems Division
Enhancements included in MPE/iX Release 5.0 have increased the disk space
required for a system installation or update. Before proceeding with an
MPE/iX Release 5.0 installation or update, you should check to be sure
that you have sufficient space on the system.
When Installing MPE/iX...
The following table lists the approximate amount of disk space (in
sectors) required to install MPE/iX Release 5.0 and supported past
releases. It displays the approximate size of the SLT only; the SLT and
FOS; and the SLT, FOS, and all possible subsystem products.
Disk Space Requirements (in Sectors)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| | HP System Components |
| | Disk Space Requirements for Installations |
| | |
| Release | |
| | |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | | | |
| | | | SLT, FOS, |
| | SLT Only | SLT and FOS | and full SUBSYS |
| | | | |
| MPE/iX Release 5.0 | 1,110,592 | 1,780,848 | 3,308,368 |
| | | | |
| MPE/iX Release 4.5 | 1,028,900 | 1,661,600 | 3,100,000 |
| | | | |
| MPE/iX Release 4.0 | 997,000 | 1,414,500 | 2,617,000 |
| | | | |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The table reflects minimum (SLT and FOS) and maximum (SLT, FOS, and full
SUBSYS) amounts of disk space required by the system software and all
subsystem products. You will need to estimate your disk space
requirements based on the number and kind of software subsystem products
purchased.
When Updating MPE/iX...
To update your system to Release 5.0, you need additional disk space for
the new release and workspace needed to perform the update. (The
workspace is reserved by creating the AXLSPACE file during the update
procedure.) The numbers in the following table specify the additional
amount of disk space (in sectors), including the workspace, you need to
have available on your current system to update to Release 5.0 from
Release 4.0 or 4.5.
Additional Disk Space Needed to Update to 5.0 (in Sectors)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | | |
| | Update 4.0 to 5.0 | Update 4.5 to 5.0 |
| | | |
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | | |
| Update with SLT and FOS | 1,153,348 | 906,248 |
| | | |
| Update with SLT, FOS, and full | 1,378,368 | 895,368 |
| SUBSYS | | |
| | | |
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This table reflects the minimum amount of space you will need (SLT and
FOS) up to the maximum amount you could possibly need (SLT, FOS, and full
SUBSYS). You will need to estimate how much additional disk space you
need based on the number and kind of subsystem products you have or are
adding to your system.
To determine the amount of available disk space on your system, use the
following command:
:DISCFREE C
Note on Disk Drive Requirements for LDEV1
The disk space requirements for Release 5.0 of MPE/iX make it impossible
to use an older HP7933 or HP7935 disk drive as LDEV1 (the system disk).
When you update to Release 5.0, you may still use HP7933 and HP7935
drives elsewhere on your system, but these drives do not have a large
enough capacity to serve as the system disk.
The newer SCSI disks (including the 1Gb C3022R or the 2Gb C3023R) are
supported on models 9X7, 9X7LX, 9X8, and 99X as LDEV1 on Release 5.0.
Models 950, 955, 960 and 980 support SCSI disks as LDEV1 but may require
a hardware upgrade. The HP-FL versions of the C22xx drives and the
C2202(3)A or the HP7937 HP-IB drives can also be used as LDEV1 in most
cases. Contact your HP representative for additional information about
supported system disks. Also refer to the article "HP7933s and HP7935s
as LDEV1" for further information.
Note on Disk Space Requirements for POSIX
In MPE/iX Release 4.5, many of the hierarchical files associated with the
MPE/iX Shell and Utilities (supplied with FOS) and the MPE/iX Developer's
Kit (separate product--36430A) consumed a large amount of disk space;
small byte-stream files frequently used 256 sectors of disk space rather
than the usual 16. This problem has been addressed in MPE/iX Release
5.0. You should immediately notice an improvement when the new MPE/iX
Release 5.0 FOS and SUBSYS files are installed (for example, in the total
disk space used by the /usr/include directory).
For the most part, you do not need to perform any additional action to
take advantage of this improvement; it is implicit when updating from
MPE/iX Release 4.5 to 5.0. However, only those hierarchical files
brought in as part of the 5.0 update are affected. Any user files
residing in hierarchical directories (such as those created on Release
4.5) may still be consuming more disk space than required.
To "shrink" existing user files previously residing in hierarchical
directories, they must be accessed and then closed through the POSIX
close() function (for example, through a POSIX application program or
through one of the MPE/iX Shell utilities such as "more"). This applies
to byte-stream files created with POSIX applications or utilities.
