Chapter 4 System Support Tools
HP Predictive Support Enhancements
by John Ediger
Worldwide Response Center Operations
Product Overview
HP Predictive Support provides proactive hardware support and helps
increase the uptime of your systems by monitoring system memory and
disk/tape drives.
When the HP Predictive Support software detects a potential problem, it
sends a message to the HP Response Center. The Response Center portion
of the system screens the data and forwards problems requiring further
analysis to a Response Center Engineer. If action is needed at your
site, the Response Center Engineer and the account Customer Engineer will
work with you until the problem is resolved.
This proactive hardware support is provided as part of the HP Hardware
and Software Support Agreement.
Upgrading to B.50.00
Since HP Predictive Support runs as a system process, interacting
extensively with the diagnostic subsystem to detect errors, it is
essential that HP Predictive Support be updated along with the MPE/iX
Fundamental Operating System (FOS). For detailed instructions, refer to
the HP 3000 MPE/iX Installation, Update, and Add-On Manual (36123-90001).
New Features
This release of HP Predictive Support includes the following
enhancements:
* Improved memory reliability
Memory error detection has been enhanced to include the memory
page deallocation features built into the newest SPUs and the FOS.
* Support for HP OpenView System Manager
If you're using HP OpenView System Manager to monitor and manage
multiple systems through a central console, you can now view HP
Predictive Support events for all of your systems in HP OpenView.
* Monitoring available disk space
This release provides automatic notification when the available
disk space on a volume set reaches a specific threshold. You can
set the desired threshold through the HP Predictive Support's user
interface (PSCONFIG.PRED.SYS).
* Support for Hewlett-Packard's newest SPUs and Disk Drives
\ \ \ Important Details \ Please Read HP Predictive Support B.50
contains two new screens in
PSCONFIG that apply to future
functionality for support services
currently being developed at the
HP Response Centers. The two
screens are:
* PROACTIVE Patching (an
option under the Configure
Utilities Menu)
* RESEND software and patch
lists (an option under the
Maintenance Menu)
Although these screens WILL NOT
initially be functional in Release
B.50, they will be used to extend
Hewlett Packard's customer support
services in the future.
Before You Update HP Predictive Support
Before you install the FOS update, you should run HP Predictive Support
to ensure that any data indicating potential problems is transmitted to
the HP Response Center.
If you have an HP Hardware and Software Support Agreement, and you wish
to have HP Predictive Support installed, please contact Hewlett-Packard
and a Customer Engineer will perform the initial installation.
If you don't have an HP Hardware/Software Support agreement, and you wish
to obtain it, please contact Hewlett-Packard.
