IntroducingHP MPE/iX Softwareon
CD

by Joy Hansen & Steve Zurcher
Commercial Systems Division and Software Technology Division

Once again, Hewlett-Packard is keeping pace with technology and improving
the system update and installation process by providing HP 3000 MPE/iX
software on CD. A new software installation tool (HPINSTAL/iX) and
integrated SLT, FOS, and SUBSYS fiiles on CD-ROM media are now available
to allow software updates using a compact disk, read-only memory (CD-ROM)
drive.

Hewlett-Packard provides a custom keyword with the CD-ROMs. HPINSTAL/iX
uses this keyword to verify the product list and to ensure that the
correct software is being put onto your system.

With the HPINSTAL/iX installation tool, the process to update your HP
3000 system is vastly improved because system availability increases
significantly during an update, permitting your system to continue
servicing users. Also, a significant credit is applied toward the
software support media costs when the CD-ROM option is selected.

Features And Benefits

By selecting the CD-ROM media option on your software support contract,
you will benefit from the following key features of this media:

   * Distribution functionality. A key feature of HPINSTAL/iX is its
ability to customize tapes. This facilitates the distribution of
software from a central site to multiple remote sites using DDS or
magnetic tape customized to the specific requirements of those
sites. The central system creating such customized SLT (CSLT)
tapes does not have to be updated prior to creating CSLTs for
additional systems, nor is that system required to be dedicated
       for that task.

   * Create a CSLT in the background on a live system. A significant
improvement in system uptime during the update is achieved because
the CSLT can be created without dedicating the system exclusively
to that task. Using the HPINSTAL/iX tool, users can remain on the
system and experience high levels of system performance while the
CSLT is being created, and with little impact on sessions or jobs
       in progress.

   * Lower price of software support contract. A significant savings
on the software support media is obtained when the operating
system and subsystem software are received on CD-ROM. This savings
is obtained because HP provides a credit towards the cost of
operating system updates and subsystem product updates. With
these savings, a substantial portion of the cost of the CD-ROM
drive can be recouped within two years.

   * Easy-to-use software update tool. Users can reduce the error rate
during updates using the HPINSTAL/iX installation tool because
HPINSTAL/iX has simple and straightforward instructions. With
HPINSTAL/iX, the progress messages, useful prompts and thorough
documentation help minimize errors before they happen. And if
exceptions do occur, the recovery process is amply documented.
