MPE/iX Release 4.5 marks the latest stage in the ongoing five year plan
to expand the openness of HP 3000 systems. This release of the
operating system provides all HP 3000 end-users with access to the
industry-standard POSIX interfaces and commands.
MPE/iX Release 4.5 provides the following new capability (bundled with
FOS) to HP 3000 end-users:
* POSIX 1003.1 Run-time Support.
* POSIX 1003.2 Commands and Utilities.
Building on the new, open capabilties provided with MPE/iX Release 4.0,
MPE/iX Release 4.5 increases the openness of the HP 3000 by providing
run-time support for new applications ported to the HP 3000 through
POSIX, and applications enhanced to take advantage of POSIX. These
applications include:
* The ADABAS and Network products from Software AG.
* NFS (support for POSIX files). NFS is available from Quest
Software.
* HP ALLBASE/SQL (support for POSIX files).
POSIX is an industry-standard operating system specification, closely
related to UNIX, that enables applications to be easily ported across
different hardware and operating systems implementations. By supporting
POSIX, the HP 3000 becomes open to supporting new applications prevalent
on other, open systems including UNIX. The MPE/iX Developer Kit (36430A)
available with this release enables developers to create and port
applications to POSIX.
MPE/iX Release 4.5 also includes enhancements to the standard MPE/iX
interfaces and command interpreter to permit MPE/iX-based applications to
seamlessly coexist with POSIX-based applications. For example,
MPE/iX-based applications can access data stored in the UNIX-like file
structure supported by POSIX (and vice-versa).
As in the case of all revisions to the HP 3000 operating system, the
enhancements to MPE/iX Release 4.5 have no impact on the ability to run
any existing HP 3000 application.
