System Debug Enhancements

by Patrick Murphy
Commercial Systems Division

System Debug includes two new enhancements. The first of these involves
the recognition of Hierarchical File System (HFS) file names in a limited
number of System Debug commands and functions. As a general rule, the
commands that accept HFS file names are those that access files for
utility purposes. Examples are the commands LIST, LOG, and USE. Commands
that do not accept HFS file names are those that deal with loaded code.
For a complete discussion of all commands, functions and environmental
variables that are affected, please refer to the MPE/iX Reference
Supplement (32650-90353).

The second enhancement to System Debug involves changes to SAT required
by the AutoRestart/iX facility. These changes include several new
commands that allow SAT command input and output to be read from and
written to virtual memory in the failed machine being analyzed by SAT. By
permanently mapping disk files in virtual memory as part of the system
startup process, it is now possible for SAT to conveniently access
commands stored in failed systems, and to save command output in
permanent disk files for analysis when the system is rebooted. Using a
similar mechanism, a SATINIT feature is also now available on the SAT
command at the ISL prompt.

Please refer to the article entitled "SAT Enhancements" in the "Technical
Articles" section in this Communicator for additional details of these
SAT enhancements and how the AutoRestart/iX product uses them.
