Introducing HP OpenView Console
by Greg Yamanishi
Commercial Systems Division
OpenView Console is an advanced system management tool engineered to
function as a smart console for the HP 3000. By providing automation
capabilities for console messages, OpenView Console enables the system to
automatically heal itself when a problem occurs. The graphical user
interface provides quick visibility to the source of problems and
shortens the time it takes to resolve problems. OpenView Console runs on
the OpenView Windows, platform which takes advantage of the power of the
windows interface.
In short, OpenView Console is a productivity tool that allows operation
staff or system administrators to perform more tasks in less time.
OpenView Console includes the following features:
* System Status Notification
* Control Console
* Automated Response
* Management Session
* Event Message Review
* Event Message Log
* NMEvent API
OPERATIONS OF OPENVIEW CONSOLE
The following information describes the features of HP OpenView Console
and their functions:
* System Status Notification. The system status shows the severity
level of HP 3000 event messages. This status is indicated by
alarms that are graphically displayed on the HP OpenView Windows
Workstation.
* Control Console. The control console provides control of system
startup, networking startup, and system diagnostics. The control
console uses a physical connection to the system console. This
can be a dial-up modem connection, DTCs, or a PAD connection. The
control console is intended for use in an emergency situation
where the operating system is down and it is necessary to boot.
It is not intended for normal operations.
* Automated Response. Automated response provides the ability to
automatically issue a command or run a command file when a console
message appears. This reduces the number of console events
requiring operator intervention, thus improving operator
productivity.
* Management Session. The management session provides control of
normal operations while the system and its networking are up. The
management session is a software emulation of the system soft
console (no CTRL-A or CTRL-B capabilities). All console commands
that were previously limited to the system console can now be
executed on the management session. Multiple management sessions
can be open at the same time to the system. The Management
Session runs over the existing network, so no additional hardware
is necessary.
* Event Message Review. A review mechanism is provided to detail
problems on the HP 3000 and the time they occurred. It includes a
description of the cause of events and shows the outstanding
events chronologically or according to their severity level on the
network. The message review process allows you to print,
annotate, remove, and view event messages.
* Event Message Log. The EML is a database that resides on the HP
3000 and records events occurring on the system. These events are
occurrences on the node that users or processes must be made aware
of. You can generate a report of events even if these messages
have been removed from the message review process.
* NMEvent API. A procedure available on the HP 3000 that allows
user-written applications to log events through OpenView Console
and display alarms on the map. NMEvent events have user-specified
severity and use the same event message routing as console
messages.
COMPONENTS OF THE OPENVIEW CONSOLE
OpenView Console is a distributed application with functionality residing
on the HP OpenView Windows Workstation and on the HP 3000 system.
* HP OpenView Master Console Workstation Software. The HP OpenView
Workstation provides a graphical user interface. The master
console software has been engineered to act as the system console
and provides access to LDEV 20 through a serial connection.
* HP 3000 Software. The software runs on a HP 3000 Series 99x, and
is supported on MPE/iX Release 4.0 or later.
