COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL XL RELEASE 3.0

Introducing the Architected Interface Facility: Procedure Exits

by Beth Eikenbary
Commercial Systems Division

The Architected Interface Facility: Procedure Exits (AIF: PE) is a
product that provides you with the ability to replace or augment system
functionality on MPE XL. It does this by letting you specify certain
procedures to be executed in place of, or in addition to, existing
procedures within system or user code/applications in Compatibility and
Native Mode. This specification may either be done on a system-wide or a
process-local basis, allowing you to limit the scope of effect. It is a
general product that may be used by any software developer, including HP
subsystem developers. It is primarily targeted for use by 3rd party
applications developers who need to augment MPE XL operating system
functionality.

AIF: PE solves the needs of our 3rd party development partners by
allowing run-time interception of MPE XL procedures residing in the
NL.PUB.SYS or other system libraries. This functionality is required to
help many 3rd parties complete the migration of their products to MPE XL.
This functionality already exists on MPE V/E to some extent in that
developers can, and do, replace segments of its systems library,
SL.PUB.SYS, with their own code. In addition to allowing these 3rd
parties to migrate MPE V/E products to MPE XL, AIF: PE functionality has
been specifically requested by many other 3rd party developers and end
user customers as a means for optimizing MPE XL functionality to meet
their specific requirements.

The AIF: PE product can be ordered directly from Hewlett-Packard as of
this release. The product number is HP36429A. End users who are
utilizing a 3rd party application that requires the AIF: PE need not
purchase the product. Prior to shipping AIF: PE to a software developer,
the customer will need an AIF User_ID. A User_ID can be obtained by the
Customer Sales Representative calling the Sales Response Center and
requesting a AIF User_ID. Only one User_ID is required for the family of
Architected Interface Facility products, so the User-ID obtained for the
AIF: OS or AIF: MI products can be used with AIF: PE.
