COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL XL RELEASE 3.0

Introducing Optical Support for TurboSTORE/XL II

by Sue Coatney
Commercial Systems Division

Hewlett-Packard is proud to announce the introduction of two new
TurboSTORE/XL products, TurboSTORE/XL II with Support for Rewritable
Optical Disks (HP36397A) and TurboSTORE/XL II with Support for Rewritable
Optical Disks and Online Backup (HP36398A). Both of these new products
feature support for the Rewritable Optical Library System (C1700A).

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

This product is another major step in operatorless backup and high
availability. Product features are targeted to use both the new
Rewritable Optical technology as well as the AutoChanger technology
available within the Optical Library System. These features will
eliminate operator intervention during a backup/restore operation and
increase data manageability. For those users requiring continuous
operation, online backup support is also available with these new
features.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Both of these products offer the following features:

   * Support for the Rewritable Optical Disk Library System.

   * No operator intervention required during backup.

   * No operator intervention required during file restore.

   *   Magneto-Optical Utility support.

   *   MPE XL SCSI support.

   * All TurboSTORE/XL II features supported.

Rewritable Optical Disk Library System Support

This product uses the Hewlett-Packard C1700A Rewritable Optical Disk
Library System. The Rewritable Optical Disk Library system provides over
20 GB of optical storage. It contains 2 Magneto-Optical (MO) Rewritable
Disk Drives, and one AutoChanger Mechanism. Up to 32 rewritable optical
disks can be stored within the Optical Library System. The Autochanger
mechanism has access to either side of each MO disk.

The software supplied with the TurboSTORE XL/II with Support for
Rewritable Optical Disk product initializes each media surface with a
customer-supplied volume name. As media is needed by TurboSTORE or the
Magneto-Optical Utility, it will be moved by the autochanger into the
appropriate Optical Disk Drive. All media movement is software initiated
and controlled. If the needed media is within the Optical Library
System, no operator intervention is needed to complete an operation.

Up to three Optical Library Systems are supported on any MPE XL system.

No Operator Intervention During Backup

With the large quantities of data storage (over 20 GB) available within
an Optical Disk Library System, and with the internal AutoChanger
mechanism, multiple backups can be accomplished with no operator
intervention. As TurboSTORE XL/II with Support for Rewritable Optical
Disks backs up your system, media is swapped automatically into the
Optical Disk Drives. As long as there is enough media within the Optical
Library System, the backup will continue with no operator intervention
needed.

TurboSTORE XL/II with Support for Rewritable Optical Disks also has
software data compression support. Using the fast data compression
feature that TurboSTORE XL/II provides, the Optical Library System can
hold up to 40GB of backup data. The high-density data compression
feature will provide up to 70GB of backup data storage within a single
Optical Library System. Up to three Optical Library Systems can be used
on any MPE machine, providing a potential maximum of 192GB of easily
accessible backup storage.

No Operator Intervention During RESTORE

Since the capacity of an Optical Library System is so large, it may be
possible to keep several backup sets within your Optical Library System.
If all of the backup media is contained within the Optical Library
System, the entire RESTORE can occur with no operator intervention to
mount media.

Every backup is associated with a name. Using the name, the RESTORE
process is easily able to find the media associated with the backup and
restore the requested files. If multiple backups are kept inside the
Optical Library System, users can restore files (knowing the backup name)
at will. No operator intervention to mount tapes is necessary.

Magneto-Optical Utility

A utility program named MOUTIL (Magneto-Optical Utility) is provided with
the TurboSTORE XL/II with Support for Rewritable Optical Disks product.
MOUTIL has the following features:

   * Front panel control for adding/removing media from the Optical
       Library System.

   * Rewritable Optical Media formatting and initialization.

   * Software synchronization with media mounted in the Optical Library
       System.

   *   Media Preparation for backup.

A command script MOUDC.HPC1700A.TELESUP is also provided to create job
streams to initialize the Rewritable Optical Media.

First MPE XL SCSI Support

This product interfaces the first SCSI devices onto a HP 3000 system.
SCSI stands for Small Computer Systems Interface. It is an ANSI approved
interface for connecting peripherals to computer systems. The connection
is accomplished via a CIO SCSI Device Adapter Card (HP27251A) provided
from the HP Roseville Networks Division. Only one Optical Library System
can be attached to a single CIO. SCSI Device Adapter Card.

All TurboSTORE XL/II Features Supported

The TurboSTORE XL/II with Support for Rewritable Optical Disks products
contains all the features provided with the previously introduced
TurboSTORE XL/II product. Those features are:

   *   Software Data Compression.

   * Data STORE/RESTORE from multiple parallel devices (either tape or
       optical).

   * IBM and ANSI compatible labeled tape support.

   * Online backup without redundant disk mirroring.

   *   DDS Support.

   * Fast search to minimize time to locate individual files on DDS.

   * Full compatibility with HP STORE/XL.
