COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL XL RELEASE 3.0

HP DeskManager B.03.R0

by Simon Boothroyd
Pinewood Information Systems Division

The latest version of HP DeskManager (B.03.R0) is now available and
includes the following enhancements.

ELECTRONIC CORPORATE DIRECTORY

The Electronic Corporate Directory (ECD) facility adds a new service
process which allows the batch update file created when using the HP
DeskManager configurator (MAILCONFIG) to be distributed automatically to
a pre-configured distribution list. The updates can either be sent to
other HP DeskManager systems in a small network or local site, or, in
larger networks, to a centralized hub for further compilation and
subsequent re-distribution. Sequencing is used to automate the sending
and receiving of sequenced directory updates in an HP DeskManager
network.

The sequencing tools can be used on their own in a small or locally
isolated HP DeskManager network. The sending and receiving of updates in
this situation can be totally automated and the application of updates in
the correct sequence can be assured.

Within larger networks, it will be necessary to arrange some type of
central manual control mechanism. This mechanism would need to accept
updates from all other nodes and collate them into a single update, and
then re-distribute them to the network as a global update. This
mechanism can be interfaced into HP Desk by means of the HP DeskManager
Intrinsics (HP27562).

MISCELLANEOUS ENHANCEMENTS

The following describes the additional enhancements included with this
version of HP DeskManager.

   * The Transport Manager can now schedule the delivery of mail to up
to 256 computers. (The previous limit was 128).

   * An enhancement has been made to the name matching algorithm. The
enhancement must be 'enabled' before going into HP DeskManager by
setting a new JCW 'NAMEMATCH' to any non-zero value. Once this
JCW is set, HP Desk alters the way in which it performs the first
and second name comparisons. (Surname comparisons will still
       operate in the same way.)

If the sender, when composing a distribution list, enters the name
'Chris JOHNSON' and, on the global database, the following names
       were configured:

                 C JOHNSON / MKTG / 01
                 Chris JOHNSON / MKTG / 02
                 Christopher JOHNSON / MKTG / 03

the sender would be offered the choice of Chris JOHNSON and
Christopher JOHNSON but not C JOHNSON. Christopher JOHNSON would
be offered, as Christopher is a superset of Chris.

   * The behavior of the User Interface has been modified when an IBM
3270 terminal is detected. Under this condition, the terminal
page length is set to 999. This means that the "Press <RETURN> to
continue" message does not appear when reading long items.

   * The IBM 3270 terminal is now treated like a TTY device for 80 byte
       records.

   * The IBM 3270 terminal is now supported for forms access within HP
DeskManager. This is made possible by use of the SNA DHCF
       product.
