New HP 3000 Series 948 and 958 Systems by Jon Davis Computer Systems Division The Series 948 and 958 are new HP 3000 Series 900 systems that provide midrange system performance in the entry level HP 3000 package. Current Series 920, 922LX, 922RX, 922, and 932 customers can field upgrade to either the Series 948 or the 958. The HP 3000 Series 948 and 958 systems and Field Upgrade products are supported on XL Release 2.2 and later versions of the operating system. However, patches are required to support the Series 948 and 958 on XL Release 2.2. HIGH PERFORMANCE IN THE ENTRY LEVEL HP 3000 PACKAGE The new Series 948 and 958 offer unparalleled performance in an entry level package. The Series 948 provides over 2 times the performance of the Series 932 while the Series 958 provides 50% more performance than the Series 948. This means that current customers of the Series 920, 922LX, 922RX, 922, and 932 now have cost effective, non-disruptive field upgrades to increase system processing power beyond the Series 932 as their data processing needs grow. Series 932 customers can now triple their performance by means of field upgrades. The Series 948 and 958 also offer a very cost effective way to obtain midrange processing power for environments that do not require the power, configurability, and growth path of the high end package. Integrated Tape and Disk The Series 948 and 958 offer the same integrated DDS tape drive and highly reliable thin-film 5.25 inch disk drives offered with the Series 920, 922, and 932. In addition to the four integrated 670-Mbyte disk drives, the Series 948 and 958 support up to 24 external disk drives to provide a maximum disk configuration of nearly 35 gigabytes. 8X Performance Range with Easy Field Upgrades With the introduction of the Series 948 and 958, entry level HP 3000 Series 900 systems now provide a greater than 8X performance range, all with cost effective, non-disruptive field upgrades. Customers can buy the entry level Series 920 and with field upgrades grow performance by a factor of greater than 8, all the while protecting their investment in their systems, software, and peripherals. No Special Site Requirements Similarly to the other entry level HP 3000 Series 900 systems, the Series 948 and 958 are the size of a two-drawer filing cabinet and use standard 15 amp 115 VAC current. This means that these high power systems can fit right into the office environment. Base System Specifications The base Series 948 comes with a 64-user MPE XL license with an option for an unlimited license. The Series 948 supports up to 400 users and comes standard with 64 Mbytes of main memory, integrated DDS tape drive, and two integrated 670-Mbyte disk drives. The Series 958 comes standard with an unlimited user MPE XL license. The Series 958 supports up to 600 users and comes standard with 96 Mbytes of main memory, integrated DDS tape drive, and two integrated 670-Mbyte disk drives. Both the Series 948 and 958 support up to 256 Mbytes of main memory.
