NON-PRINTABLE CHARACTERS
HP EDIT/V and HP EDIT/XL have been displaying non-printable characters
differently since MPE V/E V-Delta-7 and XL Release 2.1. HP BROWSE/V and
HP BROWSE/XL use this same display method.
The ASCII characters @ (decimal 64) through _ (decimal 95) are used to
display non-printable characters. If they are highlighted they represent
NUL (decimal 0) through US (decimal 31), and if they are highlighted and
underlined they represent decimal value 128 through 159. The character "
" (decimal 96) represents DEL (decimal 127) when it is highlighted and
the decimal value 255 when it is highlighted and underlined.
Many of the values in this series can be determined easily. For example,
a highlighted A is a CONTROL-A. A highlighted B is a CONTROL-B. One
commonly seen character is the escape character displayed as a
highlighted [.
Using an ASCII chart can further help you determine the exact value of a
displayed character.
