Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION
XL Release 3.0 (B.30.00) Overview

Commercial Systems Division
The Commercial Systems XL Release 3.0 (B.30.00) introduces many new
products and contains performance enhancements to existing products.
This commercial release of MPE XL further extends the functionality of
the MPE XL operating system.
SYSTEM PRODUCTS AND INFORMATION
The MPE XL Operating System now supports multiple processors (MP). The
new MP system features are: symmetric multiprocessor operation,
automatic processor configuration, and user transparency. The new HP
3000 Series 980/200 fully supports multiprocessing.
This release introduces the HP 3000 Series 948 and 958 Systems, two
midrange systems that offer unparalled performance in an entry level
package. Both systems provide an easy, cost-effective field upgrade that
will boost your system performance beyond the Series 932.
SPU Switchover/XL is a new product that features the ability of an SPU to
take over the processing of information from another SPU. This Feature is
particularly useful for achieving a high level of processing on an SPU.
Included with this release of MPE are two new TurboSTORE/XL products,
TurboSTORE/XL II with Support for Rewritable Optical Disks and
TurboSTORE/XL II with Support for Rewritable Optical Disks and Online
Backup. The major features of these two new products are: Rewritable
Optical Disk Library System, operatorless backup and file restore,
Magneto-Optical Utility Support, MPE XL SCSI support, and all
TurboSTORE/XL features.
The Architected Interface Facility (AIF) includes procedure enhancements
for both the AIF: Operating System and the AIF: Measurement Interface.
Both products have also been enhanced to support the MP environment.
The AIF: Procedure Exits is a new product that belongs to the Architected
Interface Facility of products. Although this product is primarily
targeted for 3rd party developers, any MPE XL product developer can use
this product to augment MPE XL operating system functionality.
Developers can specify certain procedures to be executed in place of,
or in addition to, existing procedures within system or user
code/applications in Compatibility and Native Mode.
Enhancements have been added to this release of the MPE XL system
security. New features have been added to file and device access
control, logon access, batch submission, and system auditing.
Both the operating system and networking software have been enhanced to
support the following increases: concurrent jobs or sessions from 600 to
850, concurrent processes from 1559 to 3119, Distributed Terminal
Controllers (DTCs) terminal connections from 600 to 850, remote
connections from 300 to 600, and a larger number of networked
connections.
Command I/O Redirection (CIOR) gives you the ability to redirect the
input or output of Command Interpreter (CI) commands. CIOR is primarily
for the advanced MPE XL user, such as system managers and system
programmers.
The format of the transaction management (XM) log files has been changed
to support enhancements to TurboIMAGE/XL. The XM log files on the system
volume set will automatically be converted to the new format when the
system is updated to this release. Log files on other volume sets will
also be automatically converted the first time the volume set is mounted
on an updated system.
Included is specific information on storage capacity that you will need
to consider when configuring your new HP 3000/980 system. Properly
matching your storage capacity with your application needs will prevent
unnecessary swapping activity and help achieve maximum system
performance.
The TUNE command now allows you to modify the timeslice values for the
CS, DS, and ES queues. The SHOW command has been modified to display the
actual quantum value and timeslice value for each of the CS, DS, and ES
queues.
The STREAM command has been changed to schedule and reschedule jobs more
consistently and flexibly, without altering the syntax of the command.
In order to properly estimate your system's dump storage requirements,
information is included in a separate article to help you understand and
plan your disk space needs.
HP Motif XL is a new product for client/server application developers.
HP Motif XL uses OSF/Motif, a product of the Open Software Foundation
(OSF) that is based on the X Window System (X). This initial release of
HP Motif consists of the relocatable libraries, C header (include) files
and learning products necessary to develop X applications on MPE XL. With
the proper hardware, your HP Motif application can present graphics and a
graphical user interface.
HP VPLUS/Windows is a new product that is a Microsoft Windows-based user
interface for VPLUS applications. The VPLUS/Windows graphical user
interface provides features such as cut and paste, context sensitive help
and the ability to run multiple VPLUS applications concurrently.
VPLUS has been enhanced to include two new utilities called VCYCLE and
VFNAMES. VCYCLE offers you a way to preview forms in a VPLUS forms file.
VFNAMES creates a file containing the names of all the forms in a
specified forms file, and can be used with VCYCLE to preview the forms
file.
The MPE XL Manual sets that normally accompany each release have been
revised with this MPE XL release. A list of these new and revised
manuals is included in an article in this Communicator.
HP LaserRX/MPE (version B.00.00) encompasses many product changes and
enhancements and must be properly updated and synchronized with this XL
Release 3.0 installation. Specific details about support and migration
issues are addressed.
Information on Hewlett-Packard system accounts is included in order to
avoid any confusion with your user accounts.
DATA COMMUNICATIONS
This XL release introduces support for LAN Manager, a networking
component of New Wave Office, with this initial release of the
Application Program Interface (API) Named Pipes. LAN Manager/XL Named
Pipes is specifically designed to enable application programs to talk to
each other and exchange information, and continue to build on the
benefits of client/server computing.
HP Software Integration Sockets/XL (HP Sockets) is a new product that
provides flexible data transfer, transformation, manipulation and process
control of new or existing applications. With HP Sockets your data can
be transferred within any properly configured MPE XL and HP-UX computer
network. HP Sockets also features programmatic start and stop of local
and remote processes, and a simple yet powerful application program
interface (API).
Enhancements have been made to the Datacommunications and Terminal
Controller (DTC/3000). New features include duplex printing and an
increase in the number of configured devices, and programmatic control of
the typeahead echo mode.
The HP ARPA File Transfer Protocol (FTP) product includes the following
enhancements that will increase your capabilities: Multiple Get (MGET),
Put (MPUT), and Delete (MDELETE), Toggle case mode (CASE) and interactive
prompting (PROMPT), and FTP user command prompting and online help. A
number of ARPA FTP commands have also been added.
LANGUAGES
This new version of HP COBOL II/XL has been enhanced to provide you with
dynamic file assignment, a special register for interprogram
communication, and improved reporting of nonstandard COBOL features.
HP C/XL includes enhancements to the compiler and the library.
FORTRAN 77/XL has been enhanced with new compiler directives and new
options to existing directives. These additions make it easier to
migrate from FORTRAN 77 on the HP 1000 and HP 9000 Series 300 and 500.
This version of FORTRAN 77/XL also provides increased compatibility with
the DEC/VMS.
DATABASE TOOLS
XL Release 3.0 introduces DBChange Plus, a new database restructuring
tool for use by TurboIMAGE/XL administrators. DBChange Plus features
include: command-driven interface, data set repacking, capacity
management, database integrity checking, and erasable data sets.
This release includes a new feature that has been added to TurboIMAGE/XL,
Dynamic Rollback. Dynamic Rollback allows uncommitted logical
transactions to be rolled back while other database activity is
occurring.
The MUSTRECOVER feature has been added to TurboIMAGE. With this
enhancement, database operators can ensure that a database is recovered
after a system failure before it is accessed by users.
Multiple Database Transaction Logging (MDBX) is a function that has been
added to TurboIMAGE, which spans multiple databases. This new
transaction allows you to group multiple TurboIMAGE intrinsic calls into
transactions that can be treated as a single unit of work.
ALLBASE/DB2 CONNECT is a new product that provides the following
features: reads DB2 data, updates or inserts DB2 data, provides full
support of the DB2 SQL Data Manipulation Language, provides transparent
translation of data between DB2 and ALLBASE/SQL, and shares SNA
communications access to the IBM server.
ALLBASE/NET now allows you to access ALLBASE/SQL databases that are
physically located on different machines. This access to the remote
databases is completely transparent to you.
ALLBASE/SQL includes enhancements in the following areas: standards,
performance, high availability, usability, and ISV tools support.
The DICTDBM utility of Dictionary/3000 has been enhanced with a new
message catalog called DBMCAT.
SUPPORT TOOLS
The new version of HP Predictive Support software has been modified to
run on XL Release 3.0. HP Predictive Support monitors system memory,
disk drives, and tape drives for users with HP SuccessLine hardware
support agreements.
PERIPHERALS
The HP 795xB disk units are not supported on MPE XL, and clarification
regarding these units is addressed in this Communicator.
ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE PRODUCTS
NewWave Office 3.0 provides a new structure of products that can be
selected and customized from a menu. There are also a number of changes
and additional services provided with this version of NewWave.
The Information Access services of HP NewWave Office allow you to spend
less time gathering data and more time analyzing and solving business
problems. Two new products have been added that enable the PC to connect
to and retrieve information from HP ALLBASE/SQL and ORACLE databases. In
addition, this release contains enhancements to Information Access Server
and Information Access PC.
The new version of HP DeskManager includes the following enhancements:
the Electronic Corporate Directory facility builds on existing tools to
provide more automation in the remote directory update features. In
addition, the product has been enhanced to: increase the number of
computers that the transport manager can schedule mail to, change the
name matching algorithm to show exact matches and supersets only, and
provide additional support for the IBM 3270 terminal.
This version of ALLBASE/4GL provides you with three new features:
dynamic loading of 3GL objects, recall of item names, and improved access
to the catalog of application items.
HP ALLBASE/BRW now supports HP ALLBASE/SQL. Four System Functions have
been added to HP ALLBASE/BRW that are used in conditions and calculated
items.
In order to increase the functionality of HP BRW/V in compatibility mode
on XL releases, four new system functions have been added. These new
functions are called TO_INTEGER, TO_REAL, TO_NUMERIC, and TO_STRING.
HP EDIT/V, HP EDIT/XL, HP BROWSE/V and HP BROWSE/XL are now supporting
the same method for displaying non-printable characters.
